Project updates

Update by Ian Davison

Hi

I hope you are all well and looking forward to the weekend

I mentioned in November that we were moving into the next stage of the project and gave you an outline of the work we were planning to undertake in Ashington. I promised to keep you up to date regarding our proposals at:

North Seaton Road.

Morpeth Road, Seventh, Eight & Ninth Row.

Highmarket.

I indicated that design was ongoing suggesting that we were working towards commencing the construction in April 2019. I invited you along to a December drop in session to discuss the proposal in greater detail. For those who could attend it was great to talk with you and advise on how the project might affect you.

The scheduling of the projects within the Northumbrian Water Rainwise Programme has recently been reviewed, it has been decided that the Ashington project will be moved into financial year between April 2020 and end of March 2012.

I apologise for this delay and I will continue to keep you up to date with our plans for this essential work.

Thanks

Ian

Hi

We are moving onto the next stage of this project, the notianal solutions have been further developed following collection and review of the topographic survey, utility service and ground data. We are now in a position to seek your views on the sewer network resiliance proposals in the Ashington catchment.

The project team have identified opportunities to carry out work to reduce flood risk in the following areas:

North Seaton Road.

In North Seaton Road approximately 500m of sewer pipe is being considered in the vicinity of the Arch Workshops, this will include upsizing the sewers to provide additional capacity. Lane closures will be required to construct these works.

Morpeth Road, Seventh, Eight & Ninth Rows.

On Morpeth Road Seventh, Eighth & Ninth Rows, we’re assessing the installation of a new surface water system, to help take pressure off the existing combined sewers.Road closures will be required to complete this work

Highmarket (rear).

We’re looking at installing an underground sewer to store storm water and carrying out some associated pipe work at Highmarket. Road closures would be required to complete this work.

Schematic drawings are posted on the planned works tab which show the areas that we propose to be working in. These works are expected to start in April 2019. Once we are on site, if you are going to be directly affected by our work, our site team will contact you in advance.

I would like to invite you to find out more about the project and to have your say at a drop-in session on Tuesday 4 December 2018 on the ground floor of the Library at Ashington Leisure Centre between 2.00pm and 7.00pm.

Looking forward to seeing you there

Thanks

Ian

Hello Everyone

Just thought I would touch base with you all to confirm that the ground investigation work will commence next week.

We will be onsite for up to 10 days undertaking boreholes and windowless sampling in Seventh, Eighth and Ninth Row, Northumberland Close and North Seaton Road. This is a geotechnical investigation which will allow the engineering team to assess the soil conditions within which the flood reduction works are proposed. The boreholes will be undertaken with a small mounted tripod rig towed to site and assembled at the borehole locations (BH), the windowless sampling (WS) will be undertaken by a small drilling rig mounted on rubber tracks. Two or three boreholes / windowless samples can be undertaken in a day, disturbance will be minimal and upon completion the bore holes will be reinstated back to the original condition.

A copy of our customer notification letter and plans showing the borehole locations are posted on the Planned Works tab.

If you have any queries please feel free to contact me via this portal or by ringing our Customer Contact Centre on 0345 717 1100. I will be pleased to help.

Many Thanks

Ian

Hi

I hope you all remain well.

I wanted to provide the community with a progress update and let you know that projects formally known as Communty Action Plans (CAPs) have now become part of the Rainwise initiative. I am pleased to report that we have continued to look into opportunities to make the Ashinghton & Newbiggin sewerage catchment more Rainwise.

We have reviewed the initial outcomes for the Newbiggin & Ashington study and have identified the areas in the catchment were our effort should be focused to reduce flood risk. This would mean modifying the sewer network to ensure less rainfall enters the system which in turn will reduce the likelihood of flooding as well as pollution to water courses. The project has been re-launched and my project team are currently working on notional solutions in three areas of the town North Seaton Road, Seventh, Eight & Ninth Rows and Northumberland Close and surrounding streets.

You may have noticed some increased activity around North Seaton Road and the west end of Ashington in the recent days. This is part of the site data collection exercise. Below is a schedule of the works currently being undertaken;

North Seaton Road and verge – topographical survey 28/08 – 31/08.

Traffic Management will be required. All works on road to be complete between 29/08 and 31/08

7th, 8th, 9th and 11th Row topographical survey 03/09 – Until Complete.

Traffic management will not be required

Morpeth Road and verge - 10/09 – Until Complete

Traffic Management will be required for part of this work, it is planned for the 10/09 to 12/09

Booths Road Double Roundabout and verge - 12/09 – Until Complete

Traffic Management will be required 12/09 to 14/09

Northumberland Close and surrounding Streets

When all the above work is complete - Traffic Management will not be required

I would love to hear from anyone who lives or works in these areas, and for you to share your experiences of flooding or the management of surface water in the area

Thanks

Ian

Hi

It’s been a while since I’ve been in touch and I’d like to give you an update on our progress to date with the Rainwise project in this area.

We’ve completed our data collection in Ashington and Newbiggin so now we’re continuing to explore opportunities that allow us to manage rainfall better – by slowing it down or removing it from the pipes, we can help to reduce the risk of flooding in the area when we get a really heavy downpour.

We’ll be looking at things which range from installing sustainable solutions that manage rainfall naturally, to upgrading the existing sewer network. We’ll be keeping you involved at every stage of the project, and if we find there is the opportunity to carry out some work to help reduce the risk of flooding, then we will always seek your views first.

We want you to get involved too – making changes at home, no matter how small, such as installing a water butt, can really help to manage rainwater in a natural environment. For more tips on what you can do, see www.nwl.co.uk/rainwise.

If you have any questions you can get in touch with me using the "Contact us" button at the top of the page or leaving a comment below. Alternatively our customer centre will be happy to speak to you on 0345 717 1100 .

Thanks

Ian

Update by Janine Rillands

Hi everyone, I work in the communications team at Northumbrian Water and I’m helping to get the message across about our rainwise initiative.

The project manager, Ian and I had the pleasure of attending a town council meeting in Newbiggin last night to discuss what we’re hoping to achieve in the Newbiggin/Ashington drainage catchment. It was great to make introductions and let residents know how they can get involved.

As climate change is predicted to increase the intensity of rainfall, we want to be prepared for the future and you too can do your bit to help reduce the risk of flooding. Check out the top tips on our website www.nwl.co.uk/rainwise about how you can take small steps to manage surface water around your home. If everyone does their bit, we can reduce the risk of flooding as a whole!

Hi, I’m Ian Davison and I’m the Project Manager for the investigations we’re carrying out in Ashington & Newbiggin-by-the-Sea as part of our Rainwise initiative.

We want to be prepared for the future so we are working proactively to understand any potential flood risk in the area and see if there are any opportunities to carry out flood risk reduction projects.

This means getting you involved too, so we want you to tell us about your previous experiences of flooding or any issues surrounding surface water in the area.

You can leave your comments on this update or get in touch using the ‘contact us’ button at the top of the page.

We will also be letting you know about the small steps you can take to manage surface water around your property, which can help reduce the risk of flooding in your community as a whole.

Over the coming few weeks we’ll be out and about in the area carrying out surveys and collecting data. If you see members of the project team carrying out these investigation works, please do say hello and feel free to chat to them about Rainwise and your experiences.

As always, if we do identify any opportunities for flood risk reduction projects in the area, we will let you know and seek your views on our proposals.
