RAINWISE SCHEME

Crook

One of our top priorities is to reduce the risk of sewer flooding to our customers. Through our surface water management programme, ‘Rainwise’, we are working with our partners and local communities by managing the amount of rainwater in our sewer network. We have identified two areas in Crook and Howden le Wear where we can control the amount of rainwater entering the sewer, reducing the likelihood of flooding or pollution.

Project updates

Update by Loren Jennings

Good afternoon.

I am well overdue for a community update on what we've been up to for Rainwise.

In the past months we've undertaken a large number of connectivity surveys throughout Crook. These surveys answer questions such as - Where does this pipe lead?  Where do the highway gullies drain to?  What pipes contribute to an outfall to a stream?

Generally speaking, we have found a lot more highway drains in existence than were previously known to exist.  So the good news means this water is not entering sewer, meaning sewer flooding risk is lower in those areas.  However, the water still must go somewhere, so it's important that we share this information with your lead local flood authority (Durham County Council in this instance).

We are continuing to look for opportunities for removing surface water from the sewer network and I'll keep you updated.

Good morning everyone.

Surveyors from our contractor Esh/MWH will be out and about in Crook this week.  They will be collecting data on manholes, pipe diameters and where exactly some of the pipes lead.  There could be temporary disruptions to roads as they access manholes, but this kind of work generally goes unnoticed.

If you have any questions about what they are surveying or inspecting, feel free to ask me.

What wild and interesting weather we had last night!  If you witnessed any flooding or drainage problems, please do share your photos and stories with me.  Even if you do not think it's a Northumbrian Water issue, I can always assist in getting the information across to the relevant parties.

We had the pleasure this morning of meeting with Councilors Tomlinson, Stanton and Patterson to discuss Rainwise and what we hope to accomplish in Crook.  Despite the cold and rain, it was great to make introductions, and we also got to nip across to see the market.

In the coming weeks, we will be arranging surveys of the sewer network throughout the Crook area.  If you have any questions on their investigations, please get in touch with me.  I hope to hear from you soon.

Hi, I’m Loren Jennings and I’m the Project Manager for the investigations we’re carrying out in Crook as part of our Rainwise initiative.

We’re working proactively and want to fully understand flood risk in the area.

This means getting you involved too, so throughout this project we will be giving you the opportunity to tell us about your previous experiences of flooding or any issues surrounding surface water in the area.

We will also be letting you know about the small steps you can take to manage surface water around your property, which can help reduce the risk of flooding in your community as a whole.

You may see us out and about as we carry out surveys and collect data over the coming few weeks, which will help us to identify any potential risk of future flooding in Crook.

If you see members of the project team carrying out these investigation works, please do say hello and feel free to chat to them about Rainwise and your experiences.

You can also leave your comments on this update or get in touch using the ‘contact us’ button at the top of the page.

As always, if we do identify any opportunities for flood risk reduction projects in the area, we will let you know and seek your views on our proposals.
