GENERAL PROJECT

Embleton Sewage Treatment Works Upgrade

We are investing over £3 million to improve storm and biological treatment at Embleton sewage treatment works to meet the demands of an increasing population in the Embleton catchment. Our sewage treatment works aid NWL in improving the quality of rivers and coastal waters for the benefit of people, the environment and wildlife.

Planned Work

WE ARE INVESTING OVER £3 MILLION TO IMRPOVE STORM AND BIOLOGICAL TREATMENT AT EMBLETON SEWAGE TREATMENT WORKS TO MEET THE DEMANDS OF AN INCREASING POPULATION IN THE CATCHMENT AND MAINTAIN THE QUALITY OF THE EMBLETON BURN AND COASTAL WATERS FOR THE BENEFIT OF PEOPLE, THE ENVIRONMENT AND WILDLIFE.

Due to the increase in housing development in Embleton and surrounding villages we are upgrading the works to ensure we can maintain standards of sewage treatment.

As part of the upgrade, we will be constructing a new screened inlet works and will be introduce storm treatment. This will retain storm flows within the works for full treatment after short rain fall events and provide primary treatment for excess flows during extended rain fall events.

We are also increasing the capacity of the biological treatment assets with the installation of up to four package tertiary treatment units.

The sewerage treatment works is located to the south of Embleton accessed off the Embleton to Craster road adjacent to Spitalford bridge. The vast majority of construction work will take place within the existing site boundary, however, there may be a noticeable increase in construction traffic through surrounding villages between the A1 and our site during the construction period.
