Update by Ruth Scott
We have made Every Drop Counts in Ashington.
Over the spring and summer 2019, Northumbrian Water will be offering customers the chance to have a free water saving visit from a qualified technician to fit suitable water saving products and discuss tips and hints to help you save water, energy and money in your home at no cost to you with a value of up to £130. We have chosen to deliver Every Drop Counts in Ashington because we know that your community is passionate about living sustainably through saving energy, recycling and growing, and we want to help you. Reducing the risk of flooding and protecting the environment are some of our biggest challenges.
We have made Every Drop Counts in Ashington.
Sharon Hodgson MP, for Washington and Sunderland West, has officially launched Northumbrian Water's Every Drop Counts campaign in Washington, which will help customers to save water, energy and money from their household bills.
More than 17,000 customers of Northumbrian Water in Washington will be offered a completely free water saving visit from a qualified plumber. The visits include the installation of a number of free water saving products, and is worth up to £130.
Alongside the free water saving home visits, Northumbrian Water will be running a number of events and initiatives with the local community in Washington to spread the Every Drop Counts message. This includes local school visits from the Super Splash Heroes - an interactive play and workshop which helps children learn the importance of saving water. There will also be a number of community outreach and customer engagement events.
Mrs Hodgson was joined by the Mayor of Sunderland, Councillor Doris MacKnight, at the launch event on Friday 4 May, which took place at Washington Millennium Centre.
Sharon Hodgson, MP said: "I'm really pleased that Northumbrian Water is bringing the Every Drop Counts campaign to Washington, as it will help people to save water, energy and money. We are very lucky in the UK that water is readily available and is it important to remember that this is not the case across the world. Water is a precious and finite resource and that we should all work together to use it wisely. I encourage all local residents to get involved and take up the offer of a free water saving home visit."
Martin Lunn, Head of Technical Strategy & Support for Northumbrian Water said: "We are very passionate about working with our customers to help use water wisely. We are really proud of our long history of engaging with hundreds of thousands of our customers to help them save water, which is great for them in both helping save money on their utility bills and in protecting our environment. Our award-winning Every Drop Counts campaign is a fantastic way for customers to help ensure that our precious water resources are used as wisely as possible."
The Mayor of Sunderland, Cllr Doris MacKnight added: "As a city and a community we need to continue working together to help conserve all our natural resources, especially water, on which so many aspects of our daily lives depends.
"Being able to reduce your household bills at the same time with advice on how to reduce the amount of water and energy your family uses, is a great way of encouraging even more people to get involved, and I hope everyone supports this campaign."
In 2017, Every Drop Counts took place in Stanley, County Durham, where 2,033 free home visits were completed. The visits themselves equated to an average of 30.2 litres of water saved, per property per day.
Washington residents will be receiving details in the post or via email inviting them to register for a free water saving visit. Visits can be booked online at https://www.nwl.co.uk/everydropcounts/, by phoning 0800 953 0130 or by emailing watersaving@nwl.co.uk
Residents will be offered appointments at a time that is convenient for them. A qualified plumber will check how water efficient your property is, and then tailor their water saving advice based on each individual household. This will include offering a wide range of free products designed to save water in the home.

Hi everyone.
This is the first project update for Every Drop Counts in Washington.
I'm Ruth Scott and I am the Northumbrian Water Project Manager for Every Drop Counts in Washington. I and the rest of the team will be posting updates throughout the project to let you know how it is going. The project team is made up of many people and organisations all focused on supporting customers save water, energy and money. There is a 'Meet the Team' tab on the front page that introduces some of them.
WHAT IS THE ISSUE? Northumbrian Water supplies over one billion litres of water every day to our customers to meet needs ranging from enjoying a glass of water or cup of tea to running an industrial process, but over the last 10 years we’ve seen an increase in the number of intense summer storms that can cause flooding and pollution to river environments in the North East. Northumbrian Water is passionate about providing our customers with clean, safe drinking water, dealing with sewage and heavy rainfall while protecting the environment for future generations.
WHY WASHINGTON? We have chosen to deliver Every Drop Counts in Washington because we know that your community is passionate about living sustainably through saving energy, recycling and growing, and we want to help you. Reducing the risk of flooding and protecting the environment are some of our biggest challenges. Each of us manage to get through a staggering 4,300 litres of water a month which is the equivalent to 53 baths of water. If everyone in Washington takes part we can save a swimming pool of water every day.
HOW CAN YOU MAKE A DIFFERENCE? Did you know the water you drink is sourced from Derwent Reservoir and then cleaned at Mosswood Water Treatment Works? Using less water helps to maintain some of the outstanding natural environment at these wildlife rich sites and provides a great place for important species to breed.
HOW CAN I GET INVOLVED? We’re inviting you to sign up for a FREE home visit worth over £130. This leaflet details what’s on offer and how you can book your personalised visit. Join your community today by signing up for a free water saving visit to reduce your impact on the environment and save money. Call us now on 0800 953 0130 to sign up. Alternatively email us with your telephone number and address at watersaving@nwl.co.uk
You may see the technicians driving around Washington or parked outside customers’ homes so you will know others are taking part.
As I said, we will be providing updates on this Portal so please do keep checking to keep up to date. Also, please feel free to post a comment if you like and we will get back to you as soon as we can. Groundworks and Northumbrian Water employees will be out and about in the community with events stands and engaging with community groups so if you see us come and say hello. If you would like to talk to us about how you can get involved either phone 0800 953 0130, visit www.nwl.co.uk/everydropcounts or email us at watersaving@nwl.co.uk
Kind regards
Ruth
