GENERAL PROJECT

Killingworth & Longbenton

Together with our project partners, the Environment Agency and North Tyneside Council, we are investing over £5 million to manage surface water in the Killingworth and Longbenton areas of North Tyneside. This work will increase the capacity of the combined sewer thereby reducing the risk of flooding during heavy rainfall. The work is to be completed in 3 phases; Longbenton High School and Benton Green & Cemetery, Forest Hall & Killingworth Moor and finally Killingworth Lake. Phase 1 and 2 are now completed and the work around Killingworth Lake started in Summer 2018.

Project updates

Update by Anthony Birkett

HI Everyone

I've been out and about around the Lake today, delivering letters to those around our working area. In July 2018 NWG wrote advising that we expected to complete the project by 30 April 2019. However, due to finalising the design requirements with our stakeholders, a section of the work was delayed, which had the knock-on effect of extending our completion date. We now expect to fully complete our work by 14 July 2019. A copy of the letter delivered can be found here

Thanks again to Lawrence for today's update:

As you may be aware we currently have a footpath closure in place to the South of the Lake - this will be in place until 15 May 2019. Work work will also be completed in the SIG car park by the same date.

As the attached images show, the work in the basins is almost completed, we now need to surface the paths and complete seeding.

The 'To Do List' is getting shorter by the day!

Enjoy your weekend

Tony

Work in the detention basins is Neary finish just waiting on surfacing of the paths and seeding

Hi Everyone

Bobby has provided me with his final update, today is his last day here as he is off to another of our schemes next week! We wish Bobby all the best in his next position and thanks for the regular updates and photos from site!

The construction of manholes 3 & 4 is going well and nearing completion - as is Manhole 6, which is within the Park area.

Also by the Park, we will be closing the bottom footpath at the Lake to allow us to start work on the culvert sections from the Lake to Manhole 6. The footpath through the park to Station Road will still be open, there will just be no short cut for a week or two! Advance Warning signage went up today advising of this. The footpath will be closed from Tuesday 7 May 2019 and will reopen by Monday 13 May 2019. I've attached a link to a plan showing which footpath I am referring to here.

Further round to the North side, the planting works at Lakeside ongoing and the work on the footbpath to the South is also underway

Over the next week or two we will start winding down a little and downsizing the compound area.

I've attached a few pictures of our work this week.

Regards

Tony

Hi Everyone

Thanks again to Bobby for the information for this progress update.

We have now fully lined the twin pipes under Station Road and in the same area we continue to make progress on Manholes 3 and 4, where we are removing shoring/benching works.

The work on the drainage works within the park area is also ongoing and we are now working on manhole 6 here.

This week and next we will be continuing with the work on the footpath and fishing jetty. We will also be continuing with the planting works by the Lakeside.

I've attached a few pictures taken this week of our progress.

Have a nice weekend

Hi Everyone

Thanks to Bobby, who has provided a further update on our progress this week.

We're working hard to get the job done and making great progress! On Station Road where we have driven The Twin Pipes under the road we have lined one of the pipes, with the other to be lined at the start of next week. We are also moving along nicely with Manholes 3 and 4.

The pipework in the park area is also moving along well as we progress from Manhole 5 to Manhole 6.

And finally work has started on the footpath and planting works within the Lakeside area.

Next week we will be making a return to the Cemetery to complete some remedial works there. We don't expect this to cause a great deal of disruption to users of the cemetery, but you may see some of our guys around for the week.

Bobby has sent over a few photographs showing what we've been up to.

Regards

Hi Everyone

Work is progressing well, despite the inconsistent weather - I've had to de-ice my windscreen a couple of times this week!

The weir section into the detention basins is now completed and we have now started on the landscaping in the detention basins - seeding and planting shrubs.

We are also going well in the area of the park and have started on the footpaths around the detention basins.

Thanks to Lawrence for this week's progress update.

Have a nice weekend

Hi Everyone

As you will have noticed, the weather has been a bit challenging this week! However we have continued to make progress with our work on the three manholes.

We've also made good progress on the Lakeside and have now finished removing spoil the basins. Work will start on the footpaths on Monday and then we will work on a Weir/Fish Pass. What is a Fish Pass I hear you ask?

Definition: A fish ladder, also known as a fishway, fish pass or fish steps, is a structure on or around artificial and natural barriers (such as dams, locks and waterfalls) to facilitate diadromous fishes' natural migration.

(in this case the fish pass is designed to keep the fish in  the lake at times where it may overflow into the basins)

On another matter, you may notice that MMB, working on a different Northumbrian Water Project will be imposing traffic lights on the junction of Great Lime Road and Southgate - this is not in connection with our work here.

Have a great weekend!

Hi Everyone

Thanks to Bobby who has provided this week's progress update:

We are now working on constructing manholes 3, 4 and 5. We have started on manhole 3 which is close to the SIG site in the industrial estate and will then move on to manhole 4 which is just off Station Road. Manhole 5 is situated within the Park area and as you will see, we are still working in this area too. Its a very tight working area here, so please bear with us.

The Earthworks within the Lakeside are progressing well and we will be soon start working on the Footpaths within the Lakeside.

I've attached a few photos kind sent over by Bobby.

Hi Everyone

Since the scheme started, we've had a change of Contracts Managers. Dave Player started the scheme, but has since moved on to work on a different project within the organisation, so he has been replaced by Mark Nicholson.

So a big welcome to Mark who will oversee the scheme until completion.

Great news! Northumbrian Water cares about the safety and health of their contractors and customers. The team have purchased a defibrillator to protect the workforce whilst working on the Killingworth project. On completion of the works, the defibrillator will be gifted to the boat house leaving a potentially lifesaving legacy for locals and visitors to the lake!

Have a good weekend!
