GENERAL PROJECT
CURRENT WEATHER
6°C

Killingworth & Longbenton

Together with our project partners, the Environment Agency and North Tyneside Council, we are investing over £5 million to manage surface water in the Killingworth and Longbenton areas of North Tyneside. This work will increase the capacity of the combined sewer thereby reducing the risk of flooding during heavy rainfall. The work is to be completed in 3 phases; Longbenton High School and Benton Green & Cemetery, Forest Hall & Killingworth Moor and finally Killingworth Lake. Phase 1 and 2 are now completed and the work around Killingworth Lake started in Summer 2018.

Project updates

Update by Steve Boyd (Project Manager)

Hi all,

An update for you as follows:-

We have over the past couple of weeks been demobilizing the site the compound and has now been cleared away, we have also removed the temporary tarmac access road adjacent to Forest Gate.

We are currently in the final stages, of reinstatements before we pull off site altogether, next week we plan to remove the temporary concrete access and reinstate the footpath as well as continuing to topsoil adjacent to Forest Gate, photos attached, this will be followed by cultivating/seeding and the installation of the post/wire fencing adjacent to the Letch

The three ponds are now well established and should only improve with time (photos attached) hope to get some Ariel video footage next week to upload weather permitting.

Have a nice weekend.

Steve.

Update by Anthony Birkett

Hi Everyone

I have been to site at Killingworth this morning and it was a hive of activity! Work is moving on fast as we start to enter the final straight in terms of the construction work.

Today the portable cabins are being removed from the compound area in preparation for the work winding down.

This means that the site team will be based from the smaller cabins located at the entrance to the access track.

Any site related queries should be directed there in future.

Hope you have a nice week

Tony

Hi everyone,

Since Christine's visit to site last week, here  is a further project update from the site team:-

We have installed the Pre Cast Concrete Flow Control Structures to all three Ponds, as well as installing/laying the Pre Seeded Coir matting to Ponds 1 and 2, and the bulk of Pond 3 this week.

The two Ponds East of the Stephenson Trail/Wagon Way back towards Forest Gate Housing estate are starting to settle down very well, and the seeding is coming through vigorously which is good to see and hopefully will only improve further over the forth coming weeks.

Weather permitting, over the next few weeks we shall be carrying out some further landscaping and fencing operations associated with the Ponds, we also  plan to start and De Mobilize the site including our temporary compound set up, followed by permanent reinstatement works.

See attached photo's for progress thus far, (Pond 1 Photo's 1-4) (Pond 2 Photo's 5-8) (Pond 3 Photo's 9-12)

Have a nice weekend

Update by Christine Taylor

Good afternoon everyone,

Today I visited site with some of our colleagues from Northumbrian Water.  If I am being honest it wasn't the best day to visit with the heavy rain, but it gave us an idea of the difficulties our site team have faced over the last few weeks.  We waded through mud and walked the site in the rain and I can honestly say it is starting to take shape.  The guys on site were still working hard with a smile of their face ignoring the poor weather.

I can see the grass coming through, which is the beginnings of the end result.  Below are some photos that I took.

Have a great weekend

Christine

Update by Steve Boyd (Project Manager)

Hi everyone,

Sorry I haven't posted recently, but here is an update for you as follows:-

We have over the last few weeks had to endure some pretty awful wet weather, so our production on the ground has been slower than anticipated, we have had to carry out pumping out operations on numerous occasions due to run off from the Farmers fields.

Along with trying to keep production going, we have also carried out extra works to ditch clean the Letch itself, which was very heavily silted up, as well as being very over grown in places.

Both of the new ponds from the Stephenson Trail/Wagon Way back towards Forest Gate Housing Estate have now been top soiled, with the first of the two Ponds now having the pre seeded Coir matting/Scour protection laid, hope in a week or two to see the Pond areas settling down with some new growth coming through.

We have also continued on with the excavation of Pond 3 from the Stephenson Trail/Wagon Way towards Killingworth Road which we are approximately 50% complete, with some topsoil reinstatements, we have also carried out ditch cleaning works to this section of the works.

See attached photos,

Have a nice weekend.

Steve.

Afternoon everyone,

Following Christine's previous update, we have this week commenced top soil reinstatements to the first of our excavated Ponds from the Stephenson/Wagon Way back towards Forest Gate Housing Estate, we have also been leading out with wagons, the stock piled surplus excavated material, work has been a little difficult this week due to the heavy rain showers we have experienced, although we have been able to maintain reasonable progress.

We have also this week commenced works to proposed Pond 3 which is within the Farmers field, from the Stephenson/Wagon Way back towards and up to hedge row adjacent to Killingworth Road, we have commenced with the top soil strip operations in preparation of the actual Pond excavation during the course of next week.

Attached are a few photo's to give you an idea of the scope of the project.

Have a nice weekend

Good afternoon,

I hope everyone is enjoying the great weather!

This is an exciting time on site as we are getting ready to really get started.  Over the next few weeks you will notice an increase in wagons and the area really starting to take shape.

We will share some photos next week.

Update by Steve Boyd (Project Manager)

Hi everyone,

We have now commenced the excavation works of the ponds adjacent to the existing Letch within the Farmers fields, starting from The Stephenson Way working back towards Forest Gate Housing Estate.

There are two ponds to be excavated and formed in this location, followed by the third pond which is to be located from the Stephenson Way back towards Killingworth road, once again within the Farmers field and adjacent to the existing Letch, this section is to be programmed to commence in June.

Hope to have some video footage for you early next week.

Have a glorious weekend.
