GENERAL PROJECT

Rothbury STW Upgrade

This investment at Rothbury sewage treatment works is to improve storm storage and biological treatment to meet the demands of an increasing population in the catchment of Rothbury. Our sewage treatment works aids NWL in improving the quality of rivers and coastal waters for the benefit of people, the environment and wildlife.

Investing in Drainage

WE ARE GOING TO INVEST £5 MILLION TO INCREASE THE TREATMENT CAPACITY OF THE WORKS AND MAINTAIN THE QUALITY OF THE RIVER COQUET FOR THE BENEFIT OF PEOPLE, THE ENVIRONMENT AND WILDLIFE.

The Sewage Treatment works serves a population equivalent of circa 2,000 people.  The process comprises an inlet works, two primary settlement tanks, four biological filters and two humus tanks before discharge to the River Coquet.

Over recent years new development has accelerated in the catchment. A recent capacity assessment suggests that as a result of growth the process units on the site are approaching their capacity. Further development is likely in the future and the village has a transient population with many visitors over the summer months. A capacity upgrade is necessary to ensure the works continues to provide adequate treatment for the community into future years.
