GENERAL PROJECT

Rothbury STW Upgrade

This investment at Rothbury sewage treatment works is to improve storm storage and biological treatment to meet the demands of an increasing population in the catchment of Rothbury. Our sewage treatment works aids NWL in improving the quality of rivers and coastal waters for the benefit of people, the environment and wildlife.

Planned Work

WE ARE GOING TO INVEST £5 MILLION TO INCREASE THE TREATMENT CAPACITY OF THE WORKS AND MAINTAIN THE QUALITY OF THE RIVER COQUET FOR THE BENEFIT OF PEOPLE, THE ENVIRONMENT AND WILDLIFE.

Due to the increase in housing development at Rothbury we are upgrading the works to ensure we can continue to ensure standards of sewage treatment can be maintained.

We will be increasing storm storage capacity. This will allow us to retain flows within the works for full treatment after short rain fall events and give primary treatment to flows during extended rain fall events.

As we are expecting more flow to come into the works we are increasing the capacity of the biological treatment assets by constructing new primary effluent tanks and installing two package treatment units.

Currently construction work is planned to start in the Spring of 2021 and will be complete by Autumn 2022. The treatment works is remote to the village and accessed via Mill Lane, the majority of the work will be taking place within the site boundary. It may be necessary to improve the condition of the track into the works to ensure it does not degrade furtrher and ensure it remains available and safe for public use during and after the project.
