Springwell Enhancements Project

Northumbrian Water proposes to construct a new underground service reservoir on land it owns off Mount Lane, along with related pipe work in the local area, in a £56m project to commence Spring 2023, following preparatory work on site. The proposed project will not only make the water supply to customers in Springwell Village and the surrounding areas more secure, but will also enable us to support the wider Wearside and South Tyneside areas with a more reliable and resilient water supply for many years to come. The reservoir would strengthen and future-proof the company’s existing network in the area, providing storage for around 50,000 properties in South Tyneside. In addition the new reservoir will enable us to provide improved resilience to the water networks to the east of Springwell Village, benefiting a further 200,000 properties in South Tyneside and Wearside.

ROAD CLOSURE ON PEARETH HALL ROAD - UPDATE

We’d like to thank you for your ongoing patience whilst we undertake the essential preparation and pipelaying works within this road closure on Peareth Hall Road, which includes closure to footpaths.  We appreciate that this work may cause some disruption to local access and so we are working hard to complete our work both safely and in the quickest time possible.

Works have progressed well since Monday, so we will be able to safely construct and open a temporary access footpath for pedestrians and cyclists for the duration of bank holiday weekend, when our essential works will be paused.  The temporary access footpath will be open from early evening on Friday 23 August until 8am on Tuesday 27 August.

We will continue to work hard across next week to make further progress on these essential works.  Towards the end of next week we will provide further update on progress made, as well as any temporary arrangements that we can safely put in place to ease full road closure whilst our work continues.

There are diversion routes in place and these can be accessed from this page.  We have also uploaded a different view which outlines clearly the routes that can be safely used by pedestrians and cyclists whilst the road closure is in place.

We have our regular scheduled drop in centre taking place tomorrow at Springwell Community Centre (Cozy Cafe) from 11:30 - 13:00 and welcome the opportunity to talk with anyone in the community about our project and its progress.
