Springwell Enhancements Project

Northumbrian Water proposes to construct a new underground service reservoir on land it owns off Mount Lane, along with related pipe work in the local area, in a £56m project to commence Spring 2023, following preparatory work on site. The proposed project will not only make the water supply to customers in Springwell Village and the surrounding areas more secure, but will also enable us to support the wider Wearside and South Tyneside areas with a more reliable and resilient water supply for many years to come. The reservoir would strengthen and future-proof the company’s existing network in the area, providing storage for around 50,000 properties in South Tyneside. In addition the new reservoir will enable us to provide improved resilience to the water networks to the east of Springwell Village, benefiting a further 200,000 properties in South Tyneside and Wearside.

Update by Richard Johnston

Hello Everyone,

A further update on the Peareth Hall Road closure, where preparation for the new pipes is well underway and good progress has been made.

We are aiming to have a safe temporary pedestrian/cyclist route constructed in preparation of the new school term by the end of shift next Wednesday 4th September.

Whilst our works continue in this area the temporary footpath will be operating on a peak time basis.

The safe access route will be open and monitored by our site staff from Thursday and Friday mornings 08:15 - 9:15 and again in the afternoon 15:15 - 16:15. The temporary footpath will not be accessible outside of these timescales.

As of today, we have the larger of the two pipes in position through the road. We will be working over this weekend to lay the second pipe, commence part localised duct repairs and start to partly backfill the trench. Because of the work involved, it will not be possible to open up a temporary pedestrian/cycle route at this time, mainly due to safety concerns.

Please keep an eye out for further update on this plan next week.

Thank you for your continued patience whilst we undertake these works

Regards

Richard Johnston
