Project updates

Update by Kevin McGargle

Good Afternoon..

Just a brief update for the planned works on City Road & Swan House Roundabout in Newcastle City Centre.

In order to carry out the innovative cleaninng of the water mains by "ice pigging" on the 4th of July 2019, at 3pm we will be setting up the Road Closure traffic management that was temporarily removed to City road, this is to enable advance CCTV surveying to be carried, at 7pm that evening we will be closing the inner lane of Swan House roundabout adjacent the Fat Buddha, this is to enable the trucks that hold the ice to park safely. The process will be complete overnight and TM removed when the works are complete, normal service will be restored by 7am the following morning (5th of July 2019).

Thank you for your patience whilst we have been carrying out this work and for the night in hand, i have attached a couple of photos of the last operation we did across the Tyne Bridge so you can see the scale of what we will be doing.

Kind Regards

Water workers spruce up Denton Dene

An important Newcastle nature reserve has been tidied up with the help of some water workers

Employees from Northumbrian Water and their supply partners, MMB, joined the Newcastle Parks and Allotments Trust team on Wednesday, June 26 to give Denton Dene a spruce up.

Designated as a site of local conservation importance in 1983, Denton Dene is an important wildlife corridor running through the heart of the west end of the city.

The area had become overgrown with shrubbery and some of the wooden boardwalks had been damaged, leaving it in need of a bit of a facelift.

The 16-strong group of volunteers carried out a number of tasks, including removing old boardwalk planks, fixing existing boardwalks and repairing paths.

The water company took on the restoration challenge while working in the area on a £3 million project, cleaning and upgrading water mains to improve water quality.

Project Manager, Graeme Ridley, said: "It was hard work but we had a fantastic day tidying up an area of the Dene to restore it to its former glory.

"It was great to see the difference we made and I feel proud of the team and the fact that we're able to give something back to the community while we're working in the area."

The team were also joined by Scotswood Councillor, Rob Higgins. He said: "This has been a tremendous effort by Northumbrian Water and MMB in bringing about improvements to this much loved and historic area of natural woodland.

"The support of local businesses is vital in preserving our environmental treasures, especially at a time when public spending on park and green spaces is severely limited. I'm sure the work carried out will be greatly appreciated by the local community. Many thanks to everyone involved."

The volunteers were supported through the Northumbrian Water's Just an Hour volunteer programme, which allows employees to give a minimum of 15 hours every year to support charitable and community causes close to their hearts.

James Cross, Chief Executive of Newcastle Parks and Allotments Trust, the new charity responsible for the management and upkeep of the city's 33 parks and 64 allotment sites, said: "We're extremely grateful to Northumbrian Water, MMB and Councillor Rob Higgins for volunteering their time to improve one of our city's parks.

"Volunteers are a vital part of the work we do at Newcastle Parks and Allotments Trust. They share our ambition to create beautiful and vibrant shared spaces everyone can enjoy and are committed to protecting the environment and local wildlife.

"We'd love to hear from other organisations interested in working with us to improve Newcastle's parks. They provide a place to relax and recuperate from our busy lives so it's important we care and look after them for the benefit of everyone that lives, works and visits our city."

Good Morning

I just thought I would show you some photos of us doing some community work in the Dene by Denton Road yesterday. We had a great day, some of the site team, our office staff, Northumbrian Water colleagues and Newcastle City Council staff, even the local councillor joined us as we all  "got down and dirty".

It was a tough day, but we all enjoyed it, we exposed a old entrance to the dene..... relayered a walk way and replaced & recycled some walking boards/area. A few local residents and their dogs were walking through at the time and were so pleased to see a "squad" of people taking time and interest in preserving a beautiful area of Newcastle.

Here are a couple of photos, I will attach somemore later.

Hope you a lovely weekend and this lovely weather.

Good Morning

Just a brief update to our works at Miller Close Killngworth as follows:-

  • We are ongoing with testing and cleaning the newly installed pipework ready for a sample to be taken.
  • Sunday 23rd June 2019 at 9am we have a planned shutdown of the main that feeds Benton Square Industrial Estate, this will mean a loss of supply for 2hrs 45 minutes maximum whilst we connect onto the existing pipework, please note that this supply will only affect the industrial estate and will have no impact to domestic customers in the area hence the reason we have chosen to do this work on a sunday morning with less inconvenience.
  • Next week we plan to complete the reinstatements to the area with the intention of being complete on site by Friday 28th June 2019.

As the works proceed i will update you accordingly.

The lane closure is at the north end of the Forster Street/City Road junction and a diversion around Pandon Bank, Melbourne Street, BuxtoStreet and Gibson Street, due to operational restraints MMB will need to extend our presence at this location until 5 July 2019.

Apologies for any inconvenience and thank you for your patience.
