Update by Joan Tatters

Good Morning All,

Just to let you all know we have now started work on the Eels screens at Broken Scar, I'm sure you will have seen Peter and the team by now. Here is a copy of the letter we have delivered on behalf of Northumbrian Water:-

"Our experienced partner, Mott MacDonald Bentley (MMB) will be extending and refurbishing the inlet building of Broken Scar Water Treatment Works. Following this, working in conjunction with The Environment Agency we will then return to install four new eel screens at the same area. We continue to follow UK Government guidance regarding COVID-19 and as it stands currently, the initial refurbishment work will start on 1 June 2020 and will last until 31 October 2020. We will then return to install the screens from February 2021 up to October 2021. Welfare and office facilities for the team will be based at the Treatment Works to limit the vehicular activity and the accompanying noise impact. The eel screens will not only provide security of water supply for the future but will also enable Northumbrian Water to achieve compliance with the Eels (England and Wales) Regulations 2009. The Eels Regulations were introduced by a European Commission to protect eels as European eel stocks are low and continue to decline. The recovery plan aims to return the eel stocks to sustainable levels. As mentioned above, the timings of this work cannot be guaranteed however, we will continue to monitor Government guidance. We are committed to the safeguarding and wellbeing of our employees and our customers. The site teams will adhere to the social distancing guidance and we ask that during this difficult time that you also maintain a social distance from our staff once the work gets underway."

Please feel free to ask us any questions you may have.

Stay safe
