Barkershaugh Sewage Treatment Works

We are about to carry out some essential work to upgrade Barkershaugh Sewage Treatment Works in Durham City. Together with our supply partner, Interserve, we plan to carry out essential work at the Barkershaugh Sewage Treatment Works in Durham City. This work will involve the introduction of further process units to serve the increasing population of Durham City and provide an enhancement of the treatment process to improve environmental protection. All of the work will be carried out within the existing site. There will be an increase in the volume of traffic to the site although we are confident that disruption to residents and business will be minimal. Typical working hours will be Monday to Friday, between 8am and 6pm. We may also be working between 8am and 6pm on weekends to make sure we complete this work as quickly as possible and minimise any disruption. We would really like to hear from you if you have any queries so please get in touch using the ‘Contact us’ button at the top of the page or leave a comment below. – Brian Ford NWL Project Manager.

Project updates

Update by Brian Hall

Hi everyone

Hope you are enjoying the sunny weather and are all ready for a lovely warm weekend. Unfortunately for our staff on site the good weather gives us an opportunity to catch up for time lost due to the recent bad weather so we are working on site tomorrow (Saturday 21st April) from 8am to 2pm. We dont like to work weekends but when the weather is good we have to take advantage. Hope everyone else has a great weekend. Brian

Hi everyone

Work is commencing well on site with piling now complete it is a lot quieter at the moment. Still preparing the excavated site for installation work and eveything is on schedule. We took some drone footage back in February and although there has been work since then it gives a good view of the existing site, the preparation work and how it will come together with the new tanks. Its also a great look at the river and this end of Durham city  link here

Hope you all have a great weekend

Hi Interserve Team,

Oooooh!

Yes I'm blogging on Interserve's project.

Sarah and I visited Barkers on Wednesday to check out where we, Mott MacDonald Bentley are intending to utilise an area within the treatment grounds.

We were so impressed with the site set up..........it was pristine!!!

Thanks for accommodating us Interserve.

Hello everyone

This week we have been continueing with the piling to the cofferdam creating a waterproof space to work in, all being well we will be able to commence excaving within the cofferdam next week. We have also been excavating and removing sludge from the old tanks to be filled with sand from the excavation. I have attached a moody atmospheric picture to ponder over this weekend. Brian

Good morning everyone

We have a lovely sunny day today at the site which makes it perfect for filming the site from our drone. You may notice this today flying over the site and the immediate area. We are hoping to be able to show the footage soon. Work is going well on site and behind the large wall of earth there is an enormous hole in the ground (see photos) getting ready for the new works to go in. We are looking to site a customer cabin on site soon where groups and individuals can view the work going on and we can display videos and information on the works, I will keep you updated on this as we go forward. Happy New Year everyone!

Hope you all had a nice Christmas break. We are now on site at Barkershaugh and cracking on with work. At the moment we are earth clearing in preperation for the construction work so you may notice bulldozers and tippers moving about on site. The next phase of work starts in February when we will be carrying out piling on the site prior to construction;  https://goo.gl/29DHwn, this will result in some noise which we will try to minimize as much as possible and will only occur during normal working hours on Monday to Friday. This will begin in early February and will last for about 3 weeks. Hopefully this will not be too noticeable off site. We will continue to keep you posted as work progresses so please keep checking here and send us a message if you have any questions.
