Our economic regulator, Ofwat, has not allowed us the funding to complete the larger Harton and the Nook flood protection scheme. Ofwat’s determintation on our plan is now being reviewed by the Competition and Markets Authority and therefore we are not in position to commit to the larger scheme at this moment in time. However, working closely with South Tyneside Council and the local community, we have committed to completing localised upgrades to our sewer network to reduce the risk of repeat flooding in the medium term.

Update by Paul Davison

Good afternoon,

You may recall that we provided an update in June 2018 regarding our plans for flood risk management and reduction work in the Harton, The Nook and Cleadon Park areas.

In the months since, we have completed further investigation work on site which has resulted in a commitment to invest £8.5million to reduce the risk of flooding resolve the issues identified in the area.

Northumbrian Water Ltd continue to work closely with South Tyneside Council and are now aiming to start construction work in January 2020. Construction work is expected to take up to 12 months to complete and will span the 2020 Great North Run event.

The preferred solution will provide flood risk reduction for residents in hundreds of properties in the area.This will involve the construction of;

·         a large underground storage tank located within Temple Park complete with above ground kiosk, access track and sewers.

·         a tunnelled sewer from the junction of Prince Edward Road and West Avenue into Temple Park.

·         a new sewer and improved highway drainage from West Avenue through the Nook up to and including Sunderland Road

·         sections of upsized sewers along Prince of Wales Close, West Avenue and South Avenue.

·         surface water storage pipework in the grass verge off Prince Edward Road adjacent to Ingleside and Greenside.Fina

We continue to work together with South Tyneside Council to investigate opportunities to intercept and slow down surface water and will share further details in the coming months.

Finally, localised below ground pipework and cables (gas, BT etc) will need to be diverted to allow us to construct the above works, however, we will provide more information in the coming months prior to any diversion work starting on site.

Regards Paul
