Good morning

Hope your all well!

Over the last couple of weeks, the team have established our site set up within the Reservoir Treatment Works. Northumbrian Water are currently in the process of lowering reservoir levels to allow our essential works to be carried out.

The crew are currently working on the spillway adjacent to the dam crest valve tower, they have taken down a section of the existing dam crest stone wall and will then form a stone ramp onto the spillway itself. These works are in preparation of the proposed tunnel drilling and injection operations, which are vital to the reservoir structural integrity.

You may see the team working in the field just off Leazes Road, this is in preparation for the installation of the new siphon pipework.

Good afternoon,

I am Rachel Rutter, the Customer Liaison Officer for Esh Stantec, the contract partner for Northumbrian Water.

You may have seen me and the project team in the area speaking to residents regarding the work. As mentioned in Northumbrian Waters previous letter construction work has now begun a little later than expected but now underway.

This essential work will ensure the reservoir and dam continues to serve the community for future generations. We do not anticipate any significant disruption and footpaths and access around the reservoir will be maintained.

We expect to have completed our work by early 2024.

If you would like to speak to anyone with regards to the works, please contact us via this portal or at nwl.customer@esh.uk.com.

Have a lovely week!

Update by Christine Taylor

Good morning,

I am Christine Taylor, the Customer Service Manager for Esh Stantec, the contract partner for Northumbrian Water.

Myself and John Hogg from Northumbrian Water visited residents and thier dogs in the area last week.  Thank you for taking the time to meet us both, it was lovely to see you all again and spend time with your four legged friends.

Whilst we were on site we delivered letters to all residents advising that following our investigation works, we will be starting some construction work around the dam on 20 June 2023. This essential work will ensure the reservoir and dam continues to serve the community for future generations.

We do not anticipate any significant disruption and footpaths and access around the reservoir will be maintained. This is a significant investment and you will notice increased activity and construction work in the area.

We expect to have completed our work by 18 December 2023.

You may have already noticed that, in advance of the work, we have begun to lower the level of the reservoir. It is of course important that visitors do not walk on the exposed soft sand, and we will be putting warning signs where necessary.

If you would like to speak to anyone with regards to the works, please contact us via this portal or at nwl.customer@esh.uk.com.

Enjoy your weekend.

Update by Dave Eden

Hi All,

Time for what will likely be the last update for Tunstall Reservoir, at least for this ‘Concept and Definition’ phase of the works:

We have completed all site investigation intended for the works at this time. These include 10nr boreholes to establish condition of the clay core of the dam, the concrete cut off wall, the bedrock and the route of any ground water. We have also carried out various destructive and non-destructive testing of the spillway structure to check its current condition, including coring through the stonework and scanning with ground penetrating radar.

The information we have gathered can now be analysed and used to establish and specify any works which need carrying out to maintain the dam into the future.

We are now carrying out any reinstatements required to the spillway structure and the access routes we have established and hope to have this completed by the middle of next week including rebuilding the section of drystone wall we have removed. We will also have a road-sweeper onsite once all plant and spare materials have been removed to tidy up any mess we have created now that the weather is deteriorating.

I’d like to thank everyone for there on going patience during this work; whilst we have tried to cause as little disruption as possible it can’t have been easy to tolerate in what is usually a quiet and beautiful corner of the country.

Thanks again,

Dave Eden
