Project updates

Update by Sarah Jayne Parvin

We have had a couple of people who have asked some few questions we would like to share with you.

When does the work start?

Mott Macdonald Bentley have started to establish their compound in Komatsu's car park on Tuesday 28th May, then construction of the work to upsize the sewerage pipes and re-direct surface water out of the sewer system is scheduled to start the following week.

Whe will the work be complete

The project should be completed by March 2020.

How will this affect me?

The project will get underway once the compound set up is complete, and will start within Komatsu's land where we are constructing some underground storage pipes. The most disruptive work to the locals will be when we add traffic management to the junction over the 6 week holidays. This will be done over 4 phases and I have included a map of each of the phases, click each phase to view map.
Phase 1
Phase 2
Phase 3
Phase 4

Will the car park be closed?

No the car park will remain open, however there are a number of parking bay suspensions along the fence line that ajoins Komatus's carpark, select hyperlink to view map.

Following on from this investigation they may be further investigation works required, however we don’t have that information just yet. Please be rest assured, we will keep you informed, what and when to expect.

Update by Tina Robinson

Good afternoon everyone,

Following consultation with the community and stakeholders in July 2018 about the Arndale House project in Birtley, NWG have been working with their partners MMB to design the scheme.  Works to upsize the sewerage pipes and re-direct surface water out of the sewer system is scheduled to start in mid May 2019 and should be completed by March 2020.

We will be working with Komatsu as some of the works will be in their car park and with Gateshead Council for works carried out in the public car park behind the Harranton Terrace and in the road at the junction of Durham Road and Morrisons. There will also be some works to re-direct surface water which will be carried out at the other side of Durham Road at the back and side of Arndale House.

Whilst we are working in your area, we will endeavour to keep all disruption to a minimum but please let us know if you have any concerns. We will provide more details of the timescales for working in the public car park and at the junction of Durham Road with Morrisons over the coming weeks.

Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions,

Tina

Flood reduction plans in the pipeline for Birtley

A Gateshead town is set to benefit from a flood reduction project and residents are being invited to find out more about it.

Northumbrian Water is looking at options to reduce the risk of flooding in the Birtley area, by upgrading the existing sewer.

The work, which is likely to begin in January 2019, will be located in the car park behind Harraton Terrace and across the junction with Durham Road (A167), near to Morrisons. Work will also be carried out in land owned by Komatsu and behind properties in Arndale House.

Northumbrian Water's supply partners, Mott Macdonald Bentley, will carry out the work, which is expected to take up to a year to complete.

Residents in Birtley are being invited to meet the project team and find out more about the proposals next week.

Northumbrian Water's community vehicle ‘Flo' will be located in the car park behind Harraton Terrace, where the work would take place, on Monday July 23, 2018 between 10.00am and 2.00pm.

The project team will also be at The Hub Resource Centre, Harraton Terrace, DH3 2QG on Tuesday July 24, 2018 between 4.00pm and 7.00pm.

Northumbrian Water's Project Manager, Tina Robinson, said: "We want to reduce the risk of flooding in future, as we know how devastating it can be for our customers.

"We've identified an opportunity in Birtley where we are able to do just that, by upsizing our sewer network to increase its capacity, which will help reduce flood risk, particularly during times of heavy rainfall.

"We're looking forward to sharing our proposals with local people and would welcome their say on them."
