Blyth Sewage Treatment Works Refurbishment

We are going to invest £1.3 million to maintain the quality of the River Blyth estuary and coastal waters for the benefit of people, the environment and wildlife. The existing sewage treatment works was completely rebuilt in 2000 and in recent years it was discovered that some of the concrete structures have started to show significant deterioration. Our work will repair a concrete structure that is essential for treating wastewater from the Blyth area to make sure the estuary and coastal waters remain in good condition.

Good morning all, it’s been a while since I provided you an update, so here goes….

We are currently working to programme and all being well the work should be compete week ending 26th October 2018.

The concrete repairs in the Distribution Chamber are complete. Over the coming weeks we now need to restore the chamber back to its original pipework, to restore the flows back to the original state and remove the pipe work diversion we put in place.

If you have any questions please don't hesitate to use the 'contact us' button at the top of this page.

Thanks

Good afternoon All, wanted to give you a further update as to the work we have been carry out at Blyth STW.

Planned works inside tanks 1, 2, 3 and 4 have been completed along with necessary replacement of parts. The team are currently underway with installing the bypass mainifold pipework and new mechanisms on the vales that make them automatically open and close.

All being well we hope to have the flows transferred to the new pipework in July.

I’ve attached a few photographs labeling progress on site.

Thanks

Good afternoon, just thought we would give you as little update as to what has been going on since we moved into the treatment works in Blyth.

We carried out a shut down in Tank 1 and drained out the water to a level where we could carry out tests, which took about 3 days, this highlighted one of the parts (a sock) needed replacing. The tank was drained and cleaned all the grit and particles that remained. This took 3 days for that process to be complete. Whilst this was being complete MMB installed a new section of pipe which included a new valve arrangement to control the water flows and also replaced the sock which was highlighted during the earlier tests.

Works on the tank were complete on the 28th March and the tank was put back into operation. I have included a couple of pictures below of the tank and the new valve.

We will keep you updated thoughout the project, in the meantime if you have any questions please dont hesite to contact me on here or via email on sarahjayne.vickers@jnbentley.co.uk

Thanks

Update by Colin Burdon

Hello, I'm Colin Burdon and I'm a Project Manager at Northumbrian Water.  Construction has now started at Blyth Sewage Treatment Works and here is a short update.

The concrete repair work is planned to start in five months time because our first stage of works is installing bypass pipework around the chamber that needs repairing.

This will provide a different route for the wastewater arriving (via the sewer system) at 200-300 litres per second as it flows to the treatment tanks.  By doing this we will have safe access into the chamber and a dry environment for the concrete to set and valve repairs to be made.  As part of installing the different pipe route, we need to cut into the existing pipes and we prefer to do this when it it not snowing or raining - the arrival of drier weather allowed us to start our first tie in yesterday!  I'm keeping a closer eye on the weather than usual and I hope the forecast for snow showers this bank holiday weekend isn't true.

I'll provide an update next month, but feel free to post any queries you have about the project here in the meantime.  Myself and my colleagues will respond as soon as we can.

Thank you.
