Project updates

Update by Peter Greenan

Hi

It’s been a while since I’ve been in touch and I’d like to give you an update on our progress to date with the Rainwise project in this area.

We’ve completed our data collection in Darlington North so now we’re continuing to explore opportunities that allow us to manage rainfall better – by slowing it down or removing it from the pipes, we can help to reduce the risk of flooding in the area when we get a really heavy downpour.

We’ll be looking at things which range from installing sustainable solutions that manage rainfall naturally, to upgrading the existing sewer network. We’ll be keeping you involved at every stage of the project, and if we find there is the opportunity to carry out some work to help reduce the risk of flooding, then we will always seek your views first.

We want you to get involved too – making changes at home, no matter how small, such as installing a water butt, can really help to manage rainwater in a natural environment. For more tips on what you can do, see www.nwl.co.uk/rainwise.

If you have any questions you can get in touch with me using the "Contact us" button at the top of the page or leaving a comment below. Alternatively our customer centre will be happy to speak to you on 0345 717 1100 .

Thanks

Peter

Update by Peter Greenan

Next Monday,  26th June, we will be out in Darlington with our community vehicle, Flo, set-up just off the market Place in front of the covered market.  We want to talk to our customers about some of the simple things that you can do around your home to help reduce the amount of surface water entering the sewer network, which affects flood risk.  We also want your stories of flooding in Darlington so we can focus our investigations as we are looking for potential opportunities to reduce the chances of flooding across the catchment.

I've attached a picture of Flo so you know what to look for and I look forward to chatting with as many of you as possible!

Update by Peter Greenan

Hi, my name is Peter Greenan and I am the  Project Manager for our Darlington North Project which covers the North of Darlington and I will be providing updates as our project progresses.

Increasing rainfall is putting pressure on our sewer network so we are working proactively and exploring opportunities to carry out flood risk reduction projects.

You might see us in the community, carrying out surveys and collecting data, but we need your help too. Initial survey work will commence week commencing 22nd May by our Framework Partners Mott MacDonald Bentley and their nominated survey contractors.

We really want to understand where surface water in the area goes during heavy rainfall so that we can remove, store, divert or delay it from entering our sewer network. If you’re aware of any water collecting where it shouldn’t, please get in touch with us.

You can leave your comments on this update, or get in touch using the ‘Contact us’ button at the top of the page. Alternatively, you can call 0345 717 1100.

If we identify any opportunities for flood risk reduction projects in the area, we will let you know and seek your views on our proposals. The rest of the project team and I will be keeping you updated as our investigations progress.
