Durham City Sewer Network Improvements

We are planning work to improve the performance of the sewer network in Durham City and improve your environment.

Project updates

Update by Joan Tatters

Good Afternoon Everyone,

Well I thought I'd keep you up to speed as to the developements of the project. Things have moved along somewhat, all the investigations are now complete with regard to the construction part of the work (storage tank and the sewer replacement) however, we need to establish what the tree roots are doing so we can preserve them.

Week commencing 19th Feb you will notice some activity within the Vale, as we will be digging some trial holes. Whilst there, we will be working with the FofFV replanting and relocating some trees/shrubs and saplings further round into the Vale, however with regret we will need to cut back and remove one or two of the trees (of which we have requested planning permission) so we have taken advice from experts and the FofFV team to ensure we do everything we can to maintain this beautiful area of Durham.

The road to the Vale is rather narrow and for those of you who have drives whilst we are working there in a couple of weeks and during the main construction works we would encourage you to use your drive at all times please. There will be plant and other machinery into the Vale so we have requested permission from Durham County Council to have a parking restriction during the work as health and safety is our priority. To reduce the inconvenience we have requested the restriction be relaxed on an evening and weekend.

I will update you on a regular basis on the project so please feel free to get in touch with me as I'd be happy to answer any questions you may have.

If you see Colin and his team (see his photo) please go and say Hello!

Good Afternoon,

I would just like to thank "The Friends of Flass Vale" for their hospitality on Monday evening. Dave and one of my colleagues Mark went along before the AGM to discuss our progress on the work. They thought it a good idea to offer the Friends an insight to how the site would be presented once the landscaping and the tanks were installed.

Dave and Mark were really pleased with the amount of residents at the event and how everyone was so receptive and keen to understand what the work entailed.

Whilst there is still some way to go to confirm everything, as things develop we will keep you informed and if you want to ask us any questions about the project please get in touch.

Keep in touch for updates!

Update by Loren Jennings

Good morning, Durham City.  I hope you did not suffer too badly from the winds due to Ophelia last night and that this update finds you well.

My name is Loren Jennings, and I also am a Project Manager for Rainwise at Northumbrian Water.  I will be working with Dave Groark to look for opportunities within Durham to identify Rainwiwse projects which will compliment Dave's planned programme of work.

Increasing rainfall is putting pressure on our sewer network so Rainwise is about looking proactively for flood risk reduction projects, rather than dealing with flooding after it's already struck.  This is usually accomplished by lowering the volume of rainwater which enters the sewer, and this has the added benefit of reducing the likelihood of pollution as well.

Removing surface water can be tricky sometimes, but it's certainly not impossible.  If you would like to see what kinds of projects Rainwise has lead to in the past, you can review our case studies at the link below.  Although everywhere is different, it should give you an idea of the styles of projects we can accomplish, especially when we hear back from our customers and really understand what happens on the ground when it rains hard.

The website also has some ideas about how you can become more Rainwise around your own home, which collectively can have an impact on you and your neighbour's resilience to flooding in the future.

https://www.nwl.co.uk/your-home/your-services/Rainwise.aspx

I will keep you all informed here on the Community Portal, especially once we identify a Rainwise project which we want to do in your area.  You can also select "Follow This Project" above and get an e-mail whenever an update is published.

Hello Friends of the Vale

I just want to give you an up date on the survey works done this week.

We have installed the necessary fencing with access gate, down at the bottom of Mr Towl's property

The sewer & storm water drainage pipe survey by cctv has been complete this week, this information helps with the design of the solution to improve the flows in storm conditions

I would like to thank the residents for being patient with the cctv van having to sit over the relevant manholes to complete the survey

Thank you and have a great weekend

Update by Joan Tatters

Hello,

I thought I would introduce "us"..........

I'm Joan Tatters the Customer Liaison Officer for Mott MacDonald Bentley, Terry Bradley is our Site Manager and Lee Buchanan is our Contract Manager. See the photos.

We are part of a great team who will starting some investigation works on behalf of Northumbrian Water in the Flass Vale area of Durham. The ground works will be in full swing tomorrow so access to the woods from Flass Vale Road will be restricted so please take care. We will have signs and all the appropriate health and safety notices in place so please be that little more vigilant during the next week or two.

Along with the "Friends of Flass Vale"  we had a site meeting on Friday 9th to mark out areas of the woodland for us to avoid when we start the work and I would really like to take this opportunity to thank you for taking that time with us. We too are keen to preserve this beatiful part of Durham so the meeting was really worthwhile to ensure we do everything we can to make that happen.

If there are any questions you would like us to answer please ask away, we would be happy to help and if you happen to see us please come and say "Hello".
