GENERAL PROJECT

Eppleby Sewage Treatment Works Upgrade

We are investing £2.5 million to improve the performance of our sewage treatment works at Eppleby. The work will involve an upgrade of the inlet system, process units and flow monitoring. This will aid NWL in improving the quality of rivers and coastal waters for the benefit of people, the environment and wildlife.

Project updates

Update by Bethany Oakley

Good afternoon everyone,

I hope your week is going well.

I thought I’d add an update to share with you the great progress that has been made on Site recently, I have quite a lot to tell you!

Pumping station

The team have installed the 1050 ring and benched, and mass poured surround and built up the rings in for the pumping station to 3.75m.

6 rings in total have been installed and concreted in and all rings have now been surrounded with concrete along with 45M concrete used to surround the rings for the pumping station.

HST

The concrete surround has been poured up to 600mm below finished level and we have removed TW from the HST area.

We have barriered and added signage to create an exclusion zone.

Pipework from HST to pumping station inlet

The pipe work has been installed and backfilled using pipe bedding from HST to first manhole.

We have also installed the manhole and concreted this in and have connected the pipework either side of manhole.

Pipework excavation has been completed to allow works to carry on from manhole towards pumping station inlet.

DUCTS

We have installed ducts from the NPG to existing chamber near new SR pumping station.

As always, should you have any questions that you’d like to ask us, please add a comment in the box below and a member of the Project Team will respond as soon as possible.

Thank you,

Bethany

Update by Bethany Oakley

Good morning Everyone,

I hope you enjoyed the long Bank Holiday weekend.

The Site Team have been working hard to ensure a positive start to the treatment works was achieved and in doing so, the Site Cabins have now been set up and the Site is fully operational.

Following some minor delays, the works have now progressed as the humus settlement tank (HST) has been excavated to formation and the base was poured on the 23rd of August, just in time for Key Process to attend site this week to install the conical HST.

The HST will be delivered on multiple loads starting this week. The tank will be constructed above ground and lifted into position with our 21-tonne excavator.

We will also be commencing the pumping station which is adjacent to the bridle path alongside the treatment works, this is very similar to the HST construction where piles and frames will be used to support the excavated sides.

The depth of the pumping station will be approx. 5m deep, once excavated 3.6m concrete rings will be lowered onto a constructed concrete base, this will act as the wall for the pumping station chamber.

During this time there will be a constant flow of wagons transporting excavated material off site.

Keep an eye out for further updates as we progress with the works and do let us know if you have any questions or concerns by adding a comment in the box below and a member of the Project Team will respond to you as soon as possible.

Take care and enjoy the rest of your week.

Update by Bethany Oakley

Good Morning,

Following Brian’s update, I would like to introduce the MMB team working on the Eppleby project. I’m Bethany Oakley, your Customer Liaison Officer. Our team includes Keith Love our Site Manager, Jack Guss Site Engineer, and Tom Mann, our Designer.

We arrived in Eppleby on Monday, and over the next 4-6 weeks, we will be preparing for our work.

So far we have set up our temporary cabin and delivered the necessary plant equipment (20t excavator, 5t excavator, roller, and dumper). We are also installing stock-proof fencing in the field where our compound is located.

Here’s what you can expect in the coming weeks:

Topsoil Stripping:  We will strip the topsoil in our compound area and lay stone in preparation for the cabin installation on August 5th.

Access Track Improvement: We will enhance the access track into the site by installing type 1 stone and road plainings on top of the existing road.

Humus settlement tank (HST) Excavation Preparation:  We will reduce dig the areas to allow better access for the HST excavation, which will be a 7m x 7m x 6m deep excavation.

HST Delivery: Scheduled for August 19th.

Important Notice

All our new assets will be confined to the existing sewage treatment works. However, we will be temporarily accessing the site from Caldwell Road, past the Cross Keys Inn, so you may notice an increase in vehicle movements around the village.

If you have any questions or suggestions, please feel free to leave a comment below, and a member of the project team will get back to you. I will post another update in the next month or so.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

Update by Brian Ford

Hi it's Brian Ford the Project Manager for the Project from NWL.  Since the customer event held in the Village Hall there have been a couple of issues which have led to our contractors Mott McDonald Bentley (MMB) starting on site slightly later than anticipated - this should not lead to a delay in our delivery programme.

You may have noticed that they have commenced works on the site on Monday of this week and are currently carrying out works on the access road and a number of surveys within the treatment works.  They will then move onto setting up our site compound adjacent to the treatment works whilst carrying out design and procurement of items in the background.

Keep checking back here for updates or even better follow the project to recieve updates.
