Project updates

Update by Rachel Nelson

Hi there

Our engineers have been out on site this afternoon and confirmed that the dumpy bags in the river are secure.

As a precaution, we will be placing additonal sandbags in the area where the wall has slipped into the river. This will be done in the morning and we will also leave additional sandbags for our customers to use if you want to.

We will continue to monitor the situation and link in with the Environment Agency who will be monitoring the river levels.

Thanks

Rachel

Good afternoon

I wanted to provide an update on where were are at with our on-going plans about re-building the wall and reinstating the back lane.

As you know, our supply partners Esh-Stanec have been onsite this week doing some further investigations as we work towards a solution.

This is a very complex situation and there is lots of work going on behind the scenes. We are working closely with The Environment Agency and Newcastle City Council.

We have now submitted a proposal to the council and hope to have their feedback in early January.
We will then be in a position to share our plans and also a potential start date.

Kind regards

Rachel

Good morning

As part of our on-going work to implement a permanent solution to reinstate the back lane and the river bank, I wanted to let you know that there will be some activity on site next week.

Our supply partners, Esh Stantec will be carrying out some CCTV work and also digging some trial holes as part of the investigatory works required to progress the project.

We will keep you informed of progress as more information is obtained.

Kind regards

Rachel

Thank you for your comments about traffic management in the area of Killingworth Road/Gallalaw Terrace.

As you know, we have spoken to the highways inspector to see if there are any alternatives which may slow the traffic in the area.  He is confident that the system we have in place is appropriate and adequate in respect of our works.

The advice we were given is that if residents are concerned about the speed of traffic in the area, they should contact the police as this is a wider issue than the work we’re involved with.  Whilst I appreciate this may not be the answer you were hoping for, I hope it shows we are taking your feedback seriously and continue to work with the appropriate people to highlight concerns – even if they are about wider points.

We will continue to provide updates on our work as we progress.

Good afternoon everyone

Our contractor Esh-Stantec is planning to complete the conceptual design for the repair work before Christmas. As part of this work they have inspected the damage to the wall in order to scope out the structural requirements for the rebuilding. They are also engaging with a sub-contractor to carry out a topographic survey, ground investigations and CCTV work to make sure they have all the data needed for the design. They have requested and received records needed from other parties, including engaging with Newcastle City Council.

In addition, our environmental team have now appointed an ecologist, who was on site yesterday [Thursday 26 Nov] to carry out a survey / appraisal to identify any potential ecological constraints, work which may be required in advance of the repair works, and the nature of the repair works themselves.

In the meantime, we have responded to local residents’ concerns regarding vehicles accessing Killingworth Road, and new signs are now in place making motorists aware of the access road in advance.

We will provide a further update before Christmas, but please contact us via our Community Portal if you have any comments or questions.

Kind regards

Rachel

Afternoon Everyone,

Following concerns raised about traffic as a result of the safety measures we have had to put in place on the back lane, I can confirm that after discussions with Newcastle City Council, new signage has now been put up to help alert motorists of the junction.

On the wider repair work, we have had further discussions with the city council, Environment Agency and our civil engineering partners this week.

Over the coming weeks you may see us on site doing investigatory work as we continue to make progress on identifying a solution.

Kind Regards

Amanda

Good morning everyone

I know a number of our customers have contacted us for an update recently so I wanted to provide the following information.

Discussions have been ongoing with our strategic partners to ensure that the best possible civil engineering specialist, with the necessary skills and experience, is appointed to deliver the project. Over the last few weeks we’ve been working together to understand the problems, as well as discussing possible options for a solution. We need to thoroughly understand all options before we can make an informed decision.

Northumbrian Water has a strict liability imposed on us under Section 209 of the Water Industry Act for any damage directly caused by the escape of water from their water mains network. This includes the damage to the wall as well as the cars and other items that were damaged by the flood.

Our Networks team are closely monitoring the site as weather conditions may have an impact on our temporary solutions, as well as the permanent construction works.

This project is a high priority so please be assured we are doing everything we can to make progress. Numerous meetings are being held over the next few weeks with our strategic

partners to discuss how we progress the project forward, therefore we will be in a better position to provide an update by the end of November.

We are keeping access and signage under review. We have a series of different safety considerations to balance, but I understand your concerns and will look to see what solutions we can implement.

Thanks

Rachel

Good afternoon,

I wanted to give you an update on our plans for reinstating the wall in the back lane. NWG has engaged one of our strategic partners in civil engineering, who have significant experience and expertise in this kind of work, to investigate the options to solve what could be an extremely complex rebuilding situation.

As we look to develop plans for this scheme we will need to speak with a number of important stakeholders for agreement to proceed, including Newcastle City Council and the Environment Agency, and we will shortly be having discussions with them about this.

The time of year, and in particular the weather conditions and the level of the river will also influence how we are able to plan to carry out these works and need to be carefully assessed.

Please be assured that we are doing everything we can to identify and deliver a robust, sustainable solution in a timely manner, taking all of the complexities into account. We will be in touch with a further update by the end of November, and will continue to keep you informed on the programme as we develop the details. In addition, as soon as we are able to make any improvements regarding parking and access we will let you know, but as you would expect we will continue to make safety our priority.

In the meantime if you have any comments or questions, please leave them below, or contact us at reviewteam@nwl.co.uk.
