Our economic regulator, Ofwat, has not allowed us the funding to complete the larger Harton and the Nook flood protection scheme. Ofwat’s determintation on our plan is now being reviewed by the Competition and Markets Authority and therefore we are not in position to commit to the larger scheme at this moment in time. However, working closely with South Tyneside Council and the local community, we have committed to completing localised upgrades to our sewer network to reduce the risk of repeat flooding in the medium term.

Project updates

Update by Paul Davison

Good afternoon,

You may recall that we provided an update in June 2018 regarding our plans for flood risk management and reduction work in the Harton, The Nook and Cleadon Park areas.

In the months since, we have completed further investigation work on site which has resulted in a commitment to invest £8.5million to reduce the risk of flooding resolve the issues identified in the area.

Northumbrian Water Ltd continue to work closely with South Tyneside Council and are now aiming to start construction work in January 2020. Construction work is expected to take up to 12 months to complete and will span the 2020 Great North Run event.

The preferred solution will provide flood risk reduction for residents in hundreds of properties in the area.This will involve the construction of;

·         a large underground storage tank located within Temple Park complete with above ground kiosk, access track and sewers.

·         a tunnelled sewer from the junction of Prince Edward Road and West Avenue into Temple Park.

·         a new sewer and improved highway drainage from West Avenue through the Nook up to and including Sunderland Road

·         sections of upsized sewers along Prince of Wales Close, West Avenue and South Avenue.

·         surface water storage pipework in the grass verge off Prince Edward Road adjacent to Ingleside and Greenside.Fina

We continue to work together with South Tyneside Council to investigate opportunities to intercept and slow down surface water and will share further details in the coming months.

Finally, localised below ground pipework and cables (gas, BT etc) will need to be diverted to allow us to construct the above works, however, we will provide more information in the coming months prior to any diversion work starting on site.

Update by Paul Davison

Hello,

It’s been a little while since we published an update on the flooding project, however, we have been working hard to develop our preferred solution. You can find out more about our proposed works via the ‘Planned work’ tab above including new downloadable drawings showing the scope of work.

Over the next 6 months we’ll be carrying out some further investigation work out on site to assist with the detailed design and will be in touch will those directly affected before we carry out this work.

We now expect to start the major construction work late August 2019 within Temple Park to establish our temporary compound with drainage work in various areas  commencing straight after the Great North Run. This is major planned work and will take up to 12 months to complete, however, we expect to complete all drainage work in time for the Great North Run in 2020.

We’ll keep you update as we progress our further investigation works in the area.

Many thanks

Further to my previous update, we have started on site today with addition site investigation work which will confirm the underlying ground conditions and help with the development of the preferred solution.

Dunelm Geotechnical & Environmental Ltd will be excavating a number of exploratory boreholes using a typical vehicle and borehole rig similar to the picture below. We will be working within Temple Park for the next week and a half before moving on to locations on Prince Edward Road (typically verge, footpath and parking bays) and expect to be complete by Friday 20 October. Each borehole should take no more than a day and a half to complete and reinstate.

We are currently refine the notional solution and hope to be able to share more detailed plans showing the proposed extent of our works in the near future.

Good morning,

It’s been a while since we provided an update but that doesn’t mean we haven’t been busy with our investigation work.

The vast majority of the initial survey work is now complete and we currently updating our model of the existing sewer network so we can progress with developing and refining a solution to reduce the risk of flooding in the area.  In the next couple of months, we will be carrying out further site investigation work within Temple Park and along Prince Edward Road to confirm ground conditions, however, we expect to be able to locate this work off the main road to minimise traffic disruption.

This information will help refine the solution and we hope to be able to share more detailed plans showing the proposed extent of our works in the near future.

Regards

Update by Tom Mann

Hi everyone

I am Tom Mann and I am the Design Lead for MMB for this project.

Over the next month you will see some of our surveyors around Prince Edward Road and the adjacent streets as we continue to collect data on the existing sewer network. We are also conducting a ground level survey so that we can develop our understanding of the flood risk in the area. The works shouldn’t be too intrusive at all but if you have any questions please feel free to ask the teams anything. During some initial scoping work for these surveys we also identified that a cover to a manhole in Sunderland Road needs replacement so our team will be on site on Wednesday 5th July to complete this repair. The works should hopefully only take a day to complete and we will keep disruption to a minimum.

Good morning,

It was great to see residents at our consultation drop in session last week, thanks very much for taking the time to come down and share your knowledge about the area and flooding issues, this was really useful and will help target our investigation work. It was also a great opportunity to talk through our initial plans and get your feedback.
