GENERAL PROJECT

Selset Reservoir Improvement Works

Together with our supply partners Esh Stantec we plan to carry out improvement works to Selset Reservoir over a period of 7 months. These works are needed to ensure the resilience of the reservoir. We will endeavour to keep disruption to a minimum, due to low water levels in the reservoir and the need for construction machinery access and free movement the reservoir will be closed to the public for the duration of our works.

Planned Work

Together with our supply partners Esh Stantec we plan to carry out over £1.2M of improvement works to Selset Reservoir over a period of 7 months. These works are needed to ensure the resilience of the reservoir. We will endeavour to keep disruption to a minimum, however due to low water levels in the reservoir and the need for construction machinery access and free movement the reservoir will be closed to the public for the duration of our works.

The work is planned to start in June 2021 subject to planning and internal business approvals. It will involve maintenance works to the internal dam face. This means that we will manage the water levels in a planned manner to achieve the works.  Water levels are currently being reduced in a planned manner. We'd really like to hear from you if you have any questions or comments so please get in touch using the 'Contact us' button at the top of the page or leave a comment below.

Teesdale has 7 large impounding reservoirs. Cow Green Reservoir sits at the head of the River Tees. Selset and Grassholme Reservoirs are situated in the Lune valley. Balderhead, Blackton and Hury Reservoirs are in an adjacent Balder valley. The Lune and Balder valley reservoirs feed water for treatment to Lartington Water Treatment Works.

Selset is normally open to the public for recreation activities such as walking and fishing. However, Grassholme which is located directly downstream of Selset is firmly established as one of the top any method fisheries in the country. Grassholme is situated in the picturesque rolling pastureland of upper Teesdale. Grassholme Reservoir is an impounding reservoir that is located about 3km to the south of Middleton-in-Teesdale and immediately downstream of Selset Reservoir. Grassholme is suitable for disabled anglers and visitors but does have some access limitations due to ongoing maintenance works that are planned to continue throughout 2021 and 2022.

On the Grassholme site we have an excellent lodge shop stocked with everything you need for a day’s fishing including rods, reels, tackle, accessories, clothing, worms, bait, ice creams and refreshments including hot and cold drinks. Environment Agency rod licenses are also on sale at this fishery.

As noted, the circular footpath around Grassholme has some limitations of access particularly around the dam crest road and the Northern Spillway structure. However, the remaining open parts still provide magnificent views across the water and a pleasant picnicking area next to the visitor centre for you to relax. Grassholme is also home to Teesdale Sailing and Water sports Club. The club is a community sailing and water sports club and a registered charity.
