The construction phase of this project is now complete.
There may still be updates, so the project will remain here. We are still monitoring the project and will reply to any comments. So if you have any questions please feel free to comment or contact us here.
Starting in 2022, as part of a £12.9 million scheme, we will be carrying out essential work to improve the performance and flexibility of our wastewater network and wastewater treatment works in the Pittington and Sherburn areas of County Durham. The scheme will help to improve the water quality of the Coalford and Sherburn Becks, as well as the watercourses downstream. We are yet to confirm an exact date when the works will commence, however once we do we will contact you to ensure you’re kept informed and made aware of any possible disruption.
Northumbrian Water and Wear Rivers Trust have partnered up to deliver environmental improvements to 7.8km of ‘bluespaces’ in the Old Durham Beck catchment from April 2022. Bluespaces are areas around water that are freely accessible to our customers via road, footpath, bridleway or other public right of way.
Giant Hogweed will be controlled and removed throughout the catchment, in a concerted attempt to eradicate this invasive species. Northumbrian Water will deliver a scheme to remove phosphorus in the Old Durham Beck which will improve its ecological status. Local wildlife sites will benefit from invasive species removal and water quality improvements and will be targeted for habitat creation and restoration.
In addition, 12 instream flow deflectors will be installed immediately downstream of the Pittington Wastewater Treatment Works site. The installation of woody debris and deflectors into a modified channel creates a more diverse stream habitat and ecological niches for wildlife. With the added benefit of slowing the flow for natural flood management. You can view an example of instream flow deflectors from a different location here.
