Springwell Enhancements Project

Northumbrian Water proposes to construct a new underground service reservoir on land it owns off Mount Lane, along with related pipe work in the local area, in a £56m project to commence Spring 2023, following preparatory work on site. The proposed project will not only make the water supply to customers in Springwell Village and the surrounding areas more secure, but will also enable us to support the wider Wearside and South Tyneside areas with a more reliable and resilient water supply for many years to come. The reservoir would strengthen and future-proof the company’s existing network in the area, providing storage for around 50,000 properties in South Tyneside. In addition the new reservoir will enable us to provide improved resilience to the water networks to the east of Springwell Village, benefiting a further 200,000 properties in South Tyneside and Wearside.

Update by Sarah Jayne Parvin

Hello everyone,

As promised, here’s an update on our progress across the project areas. Please see below for details on each section:

Eighton Banks

As part of the ongoing improvements to the Carr Hill West pipeline, pipeline testing is ongoing which has highlighted repairs are necessary to parts of the pipeline, these repairs are located in and around the public rights of way.  For everyone’s safety, temporary footpath closures will be required, please note whilst we undertake this work we will maintain an open footpath at all times as indicated in this plan (click here)

Key Dates and Footpath Closures

  1. Section 1 : Scheduled to start on Monday, 11th November and continue for at least three weeks.
  2. Section 2: we will advise on the dates for this repair

After these tests, we will carry out a final test on the section from the Public Right of Way near the community centre up to the car park. This is planned for the second week of December and is critical for water flow through the pipeline. We’ll post weekly updates as testing progresses to keep everyone informed.

Peareth Hall Road

Pipeline installation from Springwell Road to Peareth Hall Road is complete, and we are now restoring the land. We aim to demobilise the temporary site compound off Peareth Hall Road before the Christmas break.

Additionally:

  • A194 rock scaling works will begin on 18th November now that we have formal agreement with Highways England.
  • This allows us to recommence pipelaying work on the Public Right of Way off Peareth Hall Road, this will begin on 2nd December, with completion expected before Christmas.

The Reservoir

At the reservoir site, we reached a significant milestone with the placement of the final wall panel this week. We have two final roof concrete pours left to secure the structure:

  • The next roof pour is scheduled for 12th November.
  • The final pour is planned for the week commencing 9th December.

Thank you for your patience and understanding as we carry out this essential work. We’re working to minimise disruption and will reopen paths as soon as it’s safe. For more details, please refer to the updated maps and diversion routes on the portal or reach out to our team with any questions.
