Springwell Enhancements Project

Northumbrian Water proposes to construct a new underground service reservoir on land it owns off Mount Lane, along with related pipe work in the local area, in a £56m project to commence Spring 2023, following preparatory work on site. The proposed project will not only make the water supply to customers in Springwell Village and the surrounding areas more secure, but will also enable us to support the wider Wearside and South Tyneside areas with a more reliable and resilient water supply for many years to come. The reservoir would strengthen and future-proof the company’s existing network in the area, providing storage for around 50,000 properties in South Tyneside. In addition the new reservoir will enable us to provide improved resilience to the water networks to the east of Springwell Village, benefiting a further 200,000 properties in South Tyneside and Wearside.

Update by Anya Lowes

Hi Everyone,

Thank you everyone for your continued patience whilst we undertake the works in and around the new reservoir.

Reservoir Works

Over the next two weeks:

Subcontractors will be on-site to install the mechanical and electrical elements of the reservoir.

The cabling for the power supply is complete, however due to the impact of storm Eowyn, the original connection date was delayed, Northern Power Grid have advised on a revised connection date 13th February.

A new temporary working access track has been formed up the Eastern side of the reservoir and along the North, providing access to the eastern side of Bowes Railway.

We are also in the process of off hiring the crawler crane which will be leaving the site by the end of February. Any future lifting required on site will be completed using a mobile crane when needed.

The wheel wash system at the reservoir site has been installed and is fully operational. To compliment this, the road sweep will continue to operate throughout the day, helping to maintain cleaner road conditions around the area.

Eighton Banks Public Right of Way (PROW)

We are aiming to get the public rights of way open by the 14th of February. Please note we will still be completing restoration work in third party land.

Carr Hill Main

Work at the top of Sandy Lane for the Carr Hill Main connection began on 6th January. We have been liaising with Northern Gas Networks in relation to an unchartered gas main we came across whilst exposing the water main. Site activity will resume this week, starting out with installing the frames to resume breaking out the remainder of the concrete. This is likely to start Wednesday and take about a week.

We understand that the current road closure is causing inconvenience, and following feedback from residents, we’ve made some improvements to help ease the situation.

These include:

  • Additional signage and mirrors to improve clarity for road users.
  • Plating over the island at the exit of the rear of Thomas Street to make it easier for vehicles to access and exit the car park.

Please note that once the work in this area is complete, the island will be fully reinstated.

The Pipeline Springwell to Washington

The pipeline construction from Springwell Road to Washington is fully complete. Testing on the pipes starts this month and following successful tests land restoration works will follow shortly after, subject to weather.

Peareth Hall Road Public Right of Way (PROW)

The reinstatement works for the PROW are underway and are still on track for reopening in late Spring.

Look out for further updates as our works proceed.

Thanks
