Update by Graeme Ridley

Hi All.

Time for another update on Tyneside Water Network Improvement on our next batch of seven new control valves.

I am the Project Manager for Northumbrian Water and I would like to introduce Mott Macdonald Bentley (MMB) our specialist Framework Partner who will undertake the work on this batch of new control valves. Joan Tatters is MMB’s Customer Officer and Kevin McGargle is MMB’s Site Agent, both very experienced with working alongside our Customers on our Water Network Pipelines.

The next batch,  like the previous batches, will enable us to future proof  the control of flows on some of our selected trunk water mains on Tyneside and in the rural areas of Northumberland.

We are to start the next batch of work on Monday, 16th July 2018, starting first at Stanton, 5 miles to the north west of Morpeth. This was a selected location as we have key trunk water mains in this rural area, specifically at Stanton where trunk water mains from Fontburn and Tosson converge.

The order of work will be planned as detailed below:

The hamlet of Stanton

The work will start on Monday, 16th July 2018 to install a new underground control valve in an existing chamber near Stanton Mill and Wood House to the south end of the hamlet. We will have a small compound at that location but will not impede any access to properties. There is electrical work required also and a replacement electrical kiosk so after the small compound is removed after 4 weeks there will be our electrical works to complete. There will be a small diameter overland pipe required though in the hamlet , which will need to laid in the verge from Townhead Farm to Stanton Hall, to maintain continuous water supply to that area of the hamlet. The small compound will be needed for 4 weeks near to Stanton Mill.

Benwell Service Reservoir, adjacent to Axwell Park View

This new valve work will start later in Summer 2018, when all the works we need to do is installing four new control valves will be within the perimeter fencing on our Benwell Service Reservoir site. The work to install these valves will require new chambers and the work will be ongoing into the winter months. You will see construction vehicles come and go from or reservoir site and MMB’s site compound.

Pottery Lane, North Side of Redheugh Bridge and east of the Newcastle Arena

Again this work at this location is planned to start later in the year and the team will keep you updated on progress.

St Cuthbert’s Road, Gateshead

The final valve in this batch is to improve control of flows to Newcastle & Gateshead, as the Benwell and Pottery Lane valves. We are currently investigating a suitable location near to St Cuthbert’s Road, but the actual work on this location will not start till early in 2019 and the team will keep you updated on progress.

Overall we anticipate this batch to be complete Summer 2019.

Thank you in advance for your continuing patience and understanding.

Graeme

Update by Mark Robinson

Morning All,

Just a quick update regarding Clayton Rd on our Pipeline Management project...

We have completed the bulk of the Civil's works at this location and the road has been opened to allow traffic to flow from Great North Rd through Clayton Rd. However, we are aware of issues with some members of the public driving the wrong way through the one way system. Local authorities and Police have been informed and are looking into this.

Although it appears quiet at this site, please know we are working in the background on the Mechanical and Electrical element of the works.

A project wide update will follow from one of my colleagues.

Thanks,

Mark

Update by Dave Eden

Hi All. Time for another update on Tyneside Water Network Improvement:

Clayton Road

This site has progressed very well to the point where most of the heavy construction work is complete. As a result, we were able to reopen the road in one direction so that you can now get into Jesmond from the Great North Road. Though you may not see us every day now please be assured that we are continuing to work on the project. We are currently waiting for our power supply from Northern Power Grid and various materials and electrical works are being constructed offsite and will all be installed as they are available.

Hollywood Avenue

Construction works are continuing at Hollywood Avenue. We have completed the first concrete structure and we are now excavating for the second. This one involves cutting the existing 450mm diameter water main but we will endeavour to make sure there is no disruption to your water supply. We also have to work around numerous other underground services - a very challenging site but one we are sure we are more than a match for.

Jesmond Dene Road

We have returned to Jesmond Dene Road today to install the control kiosk under traffic management. There will now be a short break whilst we wait for a two-week lane closure from Newcastle City Council starting on the 9th April. This is to complete the electrical and control installation but we will also take this opportunity to replace the manhole covers in the road which have been giving us some trouble and causing noise for some of you. Apologies for this, we will make sure they are fixed permanently at this next and hopefully final visit.

Merlin Way

Work are now complete at Merlin Way bar some final tidying up. Due to the wet weather we cannot complete the grassed area at the side of the footpath. Once it has dried out we will return to rake, level and seed the area so it ends up better than when we arrived.

Whitley Road

No major works have taken place since the last update. The kiosk is in place and we are awaiting delivery of a valve so that the electrical and control installation can be completed in the coming weeks.

That's all for now. Thanks for you continuing patience and understanding.

Update by Dave Eden

Hi everyone,

It's been a while since our last update and there is plenty of progress to report on:

Merlin Way - Merlin Way is coming to a close with all the structural works complete and the reinstatement of the footpath underway. The controls and valves are all in place and ready to be brought into use any day now. We should be removing the fencing from Silver Fox Way and returning Merlin Way to normal in a week or so, although there will still be occasional visits to complete the works.

Hollywood Avenue - After a slow start, which was required to ensure there was no delay to water service, we will be full speed ahead as of Monday. We have not been idle in the meantime and have carried out as much advance works as possible. We even had Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue on site to carry out training and rescue drills so that they and we are as prepared as possible in the very unlikely event that there is an emergency. A really interesting exercise and certainly an eye opener for me.

Clayton Road - We are progressing very quickly at Clayton Road after a delayed start and have built more of the main chamber than expected. The walls were concreted today and all that is now required is the main cover slab and the major structural works will be complete. We will do our best to keep up the pace so that the road can be reopened as soon as possible.

Jesmond Dene Road - We have carried out some overnight works at Jesmond Dene Road due to an issue with noisy manhole covers. Whilst this is only a temporary fix we felt it was vital to address the issue ASAP rather than wait for a permanent solution due to nearby residents. We have further works to install the control kiosk, antennae and electrical works in the upcoming weeks and we'll make a permanent fix then.

Whitley Road - Whilst major works are complete at Whitley Road we are still working on the electrical installation. This should be nowhere near as disruptive as the previous works but you will see guys working on the kiosk and chamber occasionally for the next few weeks and we might need occasional traffic management at the round about for their safety. We will keep this to a minimum and outside of the rush hours whenever possible.

Thanks

Dave
