Valley Gardens, Consett

Looking after the environment and reducing the risk of pollution are two of our top priorities. As part of this commitment, we plan to invest within the sewerage network to construct 85m of new pipeline within Valley Gardens.

Project updates

Update by Bethany Oakley

Good afternoon all,

I hope you’re well.

I wanted to add a final update for the year so that you are aware of some recent progress that has been made by the Site Team. On Cutlers Hall Road we have tied into the existing manhole, installed the first line of drainage to MH03. Built MH03 on top of the existing sewer to allow us to divert flows when required. We are currently reinstating the road so Traffic Management can be removed over Christmas.

In the event that you require some assistance in our absence during the Christmas Break, please contact 0345 7171100.

We wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy and Healthy 2025.

Take care,

Bethany

Hi all, I hope you're well.

Following the previous updates, I am delighted to let you know that we have a date for the works to commence.

We will be starting works on 11 November 2024 for approximately 4 months.  Works will be starting with the creation of the site compound which will be located in the Church Hall car park on Valley Gardens.

Following this we will begin to install traffic management on Cutlers Hall Road on 18 November 2024 until we move to Valley Gardens in January 2025.

During the work on Valley Gardens there will be no access for vehicles in the working area, however pedestrian access will remain open.  However, to be clear we will be working at the bottom of Valley Gardens in 2 sections throughout the duration of the 4-week period which will end on 28 February 2025.  This is to help minimise disruption as much as possible.

As with all construction projects, unexpected delays can sometimes occur.  Please be assured that we’re working closely with our partners to do all we can to minimise any disruption for you and your community throughout the work.  Typical working hours will be between 8.00am to 4.00pm, Monday to Friday.

If you have any questions regarding the above or any general queries, please don't hesitate to add a comment in the box below and a member of the Project Team will respond.

Thank you,

Bethany

Good afternoon and happy Monday!

I hope you all had a great weekend.

Following my last update, I wanted to provide some information that I think will be beneficial to you once we commence with the works.

Bin Collection

If you can kindly leave your bins out, as you would normally, our Site Team will take them to the available collection point. In the unfortunate event that a bin collection is missed, please don’t worry, our Site Team will ensure your bin is emptied in our onsite skip.

Traffic Management

As you are aware, during the time of the works, we will have road closures and Traffic Management in place. Outside of working hours and weekends and the unlikely possibility of any issues occurring, there will be information readily available to you on the fencing to the works, for the Traffic Management Company.

General Queries

Should you have any questions or general queries, the Team will be onsite and would be happy to answer any of those questions you have. Alternatively, you can add a comment on the portal page below one of our updates and a member of the Project Team will respond as soon as possible.

At present, we are unable to provide you with an exact start date however we are working hard to ensure that this can be achieved as soon as possible.

Take care and have a great week!

Update by Bethany Oakley

Good morning everyone,

I hope you are having a great week so far and looking forward to a long weekend!

I'd like to update you on some recent good news - we have now received the required confirmation of funding for our flood risk reduction work at Valley Gardens.

This is a huge factor which will now allow us to formalise a programme of work and once we have the relevent information, we endevour to write to customers in the area to keep them informed and up to speed with where we are.

Thank you to those who came to our first Customer Event at Valley Gardens, it was a great opportunity to hear from you and answer any questions or concerns you had.

I'd also like to thank you for your patience with myself and the rest of the Project Team and as always, if you do have any further questions or concerns, pop a comment in the box below and a member of the Project Team will respond as soon as possible.

Take care,

Bethany

Good morning,

I hope you are well.

Further to Mike’s update earlier this week, I wanted to provide a further update on the investigation works that we intend to carry out on Wednesday 29th and Thursday 30th May.

During this time, we will dig 3 trial holes to carry out some investigations and confirm the appropriate services. Traffic management will be in place, and we endeavour to cause as little disruption as possible whilst the investigations are under way. Once the small excavations have been carried out, we will of course reinstate these areas.

Thank you,

Update by Mike Foster

Hi, I'm Mike Foster, the Project Manager for the Valley Gardens Sewer network project to reduce the risk of external flooding to the previously affected property's and surrounding areas.

From the studies already carried out the proposed solution will remove the external flooding experienced at the affected properties and reduce the amount of flooding in the local study area. Analysis of the Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) has also shown that this solution will not cause detriment to other areas.

I have 30 years of experience in the water industry, mostly as a project engineer and project manager in our Capital Delivery department. I will be a key contact for the whole team to ensure we can deliver this investment. Whilst we must comply with a wide range of rules and regulations I am keen to ensure that we undertake this work with minimal disruption to you and the community we are part of.

If you have any concerns over the work we are carrying out or if you would like further information on the project - please get in touch, I’d be happy to provide more details on what we are doing.

Planned Work

The Valley Gardens Sewer network project is required to reduce the risk of external flooding to previously affected property's and surrounding areas.

From the studies already carried out the proposed solution will remove the external flooding observed at the affected properties and reduce the amount of flooding in the local study area. Analysis Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) has also shown that this solution will not cause detriment to other areas.

The preferred option aims to reduce the headlosses downstream of the externally flooding properties and provide some additional capacity in the combined sewer network local to the affected properties.

The solution shows that the flooding is alleviated in a 1 in 20-year return period event. All new pipes will be 450mm diameter and flood volume comparisons have shown that this option will remove the external flooding observed at the flooding manholes and reduce the amount of flooding in the local study area. Additional CSO analysis has also shown that this solution will not cause detriment to the sewer network downstream of the study area.

The proposal is to intercept the existing 300mm diameter combined sewer that runs along the highway of Valley Gardens and constructing a new sewer to divert flows to the manhole in the main road (Cutlers' Hall road).

This option has been estimated as comprising of the following works and shown in the map below:

  • Approximately 85m of new 450mm diameter sewer;
  • Three new manhole chambers.
