GENERAL PROJECT

Birtley Reed Beds Refurbishment

Reed beds refurbishment to provide free space within the beds for further treatment of minewater and sewage using this sustainable process. Our sewage treatment works and reed beds aid NWG in improving the quality of rivers and coastal waters for the benefit of people, the environment and wildlife.

Planned Work

WHERE WE WILL BE WORKING AND WHAT IT WILL INVOLVE

Birtley STW & Reed Beds near Lamesley.

We will be removing waste material from the reed beds that has built up during fifteen years of successfully co-treating minewater and sewage from Birtley Sewage Treatment Works.  The waste material from the reed beds is recyclable and once removed it shall provide free space within the reed beds for further treatment of minewater and sewage using this sustainable process.

The work is expected to start April 2021 and complete by July 2022.
