Planned Work

At Northumbrian Water, looking after the environment is one of our top priorities. As part of this commitment, we are working with our supply partner, Galliford Try Construction to undertake upgrade work at Fishburn sewage treatment works (STW) to improve the performance of our wastewater treatment. This essential work will help to improve water quality and ensure that the treatment facility continues to serve the community effectively.

The Sewage Treatment works serves Fishburn village with a population of over 3,500. The process comprises an inlet works (screening), storm storage, primary settlement tanks biological filters, final settlement tanks before discharging to the Skerne.

As part of a wider Water Improvement National Environment Programme (WINEP), we are improving our treatment process to reduce the amount of phosphorus entering the receiving watercourse using chemical dosing to condition wastewater prior to traditional solids settlement. In addition, we will be introducing an alternative mechanical tertiary filtration package plant to ensure we can meet new permitted phosphorus limits.

With funding secured and the design suitably developed, we expect work to begin on site starting Monday 4 December 2023 for up to 8 months. However, as with all construction projects, unexpected delays can sometimes occur. Typical working hours will be Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm.
