Heworth Burn

Working closely with Gateshead council, we are looking to invest up to £4 million to upgrade our sewers and highway drainage in the Heworth area.

Planned work

OVER THE PAST FEW MONTHS, YOU MAY HAVE SEEN OUR CONTRACTORS CARRYING OUT INVESTIGATION WORK TO HELP UNDERSTAND THE UNDERLYING GROUND CONDITIONS AND IDENTIFY THE LOCATION OF BURIED SERVICES IN THE LOCAL AREA WHICH HAS HELPED DEVELOP OUR OUTLINE SOLUTION.

OUTLINE SOLUTION

The initial outline solution would include the construction of a surface water pumping station located within the Heworth Interchange long stay car park and surface water drainage between the pumping station and Low Heworth Lane (refer to downloadable outline plans to the right).

The new pumping station will remove a large proportion of flows from the Heworth Burn that currently discharge to the combined system. This will free up vital capacity in our network and reduce sewage overflow spills to the Tyne.

In conjunction with Gateshead Council, we are also looking to reduce the risk of surface water flooding in the local area with the introduction of highway drainage and upsizing of existing sewers in Sunderland Road together with the construction of a new relief chamber adjacent to the Swan Pub.

Subject to securing a project budget, we are working towards commencing construction in January 2019 and anticipate the work will take up to seven months to complete.
