Marden Quarry

We are investing £2.5 million to separate Marden Quarry and other sources of surface water from the public sewer network. This will improve the performance of our sewer network and help reduce the risk of flooding. This project is the second and final phase of work being carried out in North Cullercoats.

Planned works

WE WILL BE INSTALLING OVER 550 METRES OF PIPE TO DIVERT SURFACE WATER FROM MARDEN QUARRY TO THE NORTH SEA.

Before installing this pipe, we will divert water, electric and telecoms to make space for the new sewer pipe.

The pipe installation will be divided into the two following areas:

Area A – North View and Burnside Road

Work here will involve installing a new surface water sewer by digging a series of trenches to install the new pipe. We will be working in roughly 50 metre sections at a time and a phased road closure will be in place during this work. We will notify you in advance of the work if you will be directly affected. Please refer to the Traffic information section for more information.

Once this is installed, we will connect the existing highway gullies and install new ones to the new sewer to help improve highway drainage in this area.

Area B – Burnside Road and Marden Quarry

Work here will involve installing a new surface water sewer to connect Marden Quarry to the new sewer on Burnside Road. We will be using tunnelling technology to carry out this part of the work which means we will need to dig fewer trenches to install the new pipe. This method involves creating a tunnel underground and guiding the new pipe through the tunnel. Temporary traffic management will be required at times during this part of the work, please refer to the Traffic information section for more information.
