Monks Wood, North Shields Surface Attenuation

We are currently on site adjacent to Beach Road. Our scheme is to separate surface water flows from the combined sewerage system and store the excessive flows during storms. To do this, we are constructing new surface water and combined sewers together with a series of cascading basins in which to hold back the flows until the storm subsides and the existing sewerage system can accept the storm water.

Planned Work

We have, in the early stages of this project, worked with the community to explore opportunities to reduce the risk of flooding by removing surface water from our network, using sustainable methods where possible. This project has also been part of Northumbrian Water’s Rainwise initiative and further details are available following links on the project portal.

Northumbrian Water have now installed sewers to provide a high-level relief to the combined sewers crossing Beach Road diverting them to the combined sewer network running on the north side of Beach Road. We have also separated the surface water sewers from the Preston Grange estate and Whitehouse Primary School to be attenuated in sustainable urban drainage storage basins, these basins are being constructed now.
