GENERAL PROJECT

Sherburn Upgrade

Starting in 2022, as part of a £12.9 million scheme, we will be carrying out essential work to improve the performance and flexibility of our wastewater network and wastewater treatment works in the Pittington and Sherburn areas of County Durham. The scheme will help to improve the water quality of the Coalford and Sherburn Becks, as well as the watercourses downstream. We are yet to confirm an exact date when the works will commence, however once we do we will contact you to ensure you’re kept informed and made aware of any possible disruption.

Just a quick update to let you know that we will be placing a two-way traffic managment system along Mill Lane between Sherburn STW and Lartington Way from Monday 20th February while we try to locate a gas main and the existing water main. This should take approximatley two weeks to carry out.

We would like to thank you for your patience during this time.

Good afternoon,

Following on from my previous update, here is what has been going on at Pittington and Sherburn over the last few weeks.

Pittington

The team working on the Gravity Sewer pipeline in field 9 are currently installing the 225mm pipeline between manhole chamber 2 and manhole chamber 1. The construction of manhole chamber 2 is also underway. I have included a photo below.
On the Rising Main Pipeline the team are working in Fields 6 and 7 fitting the air valves to the new pipeline. Drilling work is also complete.
At Pittington STW, the excavation and shoring of the new SPS has been carried out with the concrete base now poured. We are continuing to fit the valves, penstocks and flap valve within the Storm Tanks.

I have attached a plan here of the working area mentioned.

Sherburn STW

Since our last update, the site set-up is now complete. The team are now carrying out excavation works for the new retaining wall and deep backwash tank. I have also attached a photo of the new electrical kiosk on site.

As always, please feel free to leave a comment below with any questions you may have and a member of the project team will get back to you.

Thanks.

Hello,

We hope you had a lovely Christmas and New Year! The team returned to work the first week in January, and since then they have been busy carrying on from where we left off before the Christmas break.

Sherburn STW

I'll start our update with what has been happening at Sherburn STW. The site set-up is nearly complete with the site cabins almost up and running. The team will be removing the existing surplus material off site and installing a construction platform across the tertiary process area to commence construction works. Next week, Northern Powergrid will be undertaking works to upgrade the power supply to site.

Pittington

At Pittington Sewage Treatment Works, our subcontractor, NML, are carrying out the coring works for the pipework which will interlink the storm tanks and the new manhole chamber. Once this has been complete, the weir wall inside the two new storm tanks will be constructed. We are continuing to open cut and lay the Rising Main pipeline in Fields 7 and 8. Drilling works are also taking place in Fields 5 and 6 this week and next week. Over on the Gravity Sewer, Manhole 3 is also underway (highlighted on the plan below).

I have attached a plan here with the relevant working areas highlighted.

As always, if you have any questions you'd like answering please leave a comment below and a member of the project team will get back to you.

Thanks.

Update by Gabrielle Ward

Good Morning,

Christmas is creeping up fast, so I thought I'd post a quick update on what has been happening over the past month.

The team have been busy installing the new rising main pipeline, and the new gravity sewer pipeline. Around 1200 metres of rising main has been laid, and 470 metres of gravity sewer. Work has now commenced within the treatment works including the installation of the storm tanks and the NPG Kiosk which are currently underway.

We have been carrying out drilling works on Front Street over the past few days which are almost complete.

Prior to the Christmas break, the team will continue laying the rising main along Cookshold Lane and Front Street and the gravity sewer along South Street and Front Street.

The lads will be getting a well-deserved break from Wednesday 21st December until Tuesday 3rd January for the Christmas shut down.

An update will be posted in the New Year so keep a look out!

On behalf of the Project Team, we would like to wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Hello,

Since my last update we have been continuing to lay the gravity sewer and rising main pipework. So far, we have laid 365 metres of gravity sewer and 800 metres of rising main.

We will be continuing to lay the rising main pipe along Cookshold Lane over the upcoming weeks, and the gravity sewer adjacent to South Street and Front street, Sherburn. Drilling works from Pittington Sewage Treatment Works to Littletown Farm will also be on-going.

Some of you may have noticed an increase in traffic through South Street accessing the field at South Street crossing. This is due to drilling works we are currently carrying out in this area. From Monday 7th November for approximatey five working days, we kindly ask and where possible, access is kept clear through South Street from 8.00am until 5.00pm daily as we have larger vehicles than usual using this route. We appreciate this is a narrow lane with limited parking so, if you are struggling with parking and require any assistance please feel free to speak to our site team for assistance.  You can also eave us a comment below if you have any questions, and a member of the project team will get back to you.

As always, thank you for your patience and understanding during this time.

Hello,

I just thought I'd post a quick update about what's being going on over the last month.

We have finished stripping the easements in all the fields where the new pipeline is to be laid, giving the team the capacity to start installing the new pipe. During this time, 115.35m of gravity sewer, and 156m of the rising main has been laid. You can view the pipeline route here.

On Thursday 29th September, as part of the Old Durham Beck Renewed Bluespaces project, Northumbrian Water and MMB spent the day working with Wear Rivers Trust to help install flow deflectors into to the stream immediately downstream of the Pittington Wastewater Treatment Works site. This includes the installation of woody debris and deflectors into the stream which creates little habitats for wildlife and helps improve biodiversity. While we were there the team found a European Eel which is likely to have travelled all the way from the Caribbean to Durham!

I have included some photos of our work, along with the photos from installing the flow deflectors.

If you have any questions, please leave a comment below and a member of the project team will get back to you.

Thanks.
