GENERAL PROJECT

Storm Overflows Environmental Improvements

To improve the resilience and enhance the performance of the sewer network in Northumbrian Water is investing in the overflows in West Rainton, Ludworth, Bishop Auckland and Skelton. This work will ensure we deliver sewerage services that meet the needs of current and future generations whilst improving the quality of our rivers and watercourses for the benefit of people, the environment and wildlife.

Lingdale - Stanghow Rd

LOOKING AFTER THE ENVIRONMENT IS ONE OF OUR TOP PRIORITIES. WE ARE INVESTING £9.5M TO INCREASE CATCHMENT RESILIANCE AND MAINTAIN THE QUALITY OF WATERCOURSES FOR THE BENEFIT OF OUR CUSTOMERS, THE ENVIRONMENT AND WILDLIFE.

We have completed the investigation into options to reduce Storm Overflow spill frequency improving the performance of the sewer network and mitigating environmental risk. The preferred option comprises;

  • 500m of new 225mm surface water sewer along Stanghow Road / Dale Terrace.
  • 800m of new 225mm surface water sewer within the Balmoral Road Estate.
  • 500m of new 450mm surface water sewer across Lingdale wildlife meadow.
  • 200m3 of below ground storage in a bank of large diameter sewers with associated network alterations in farmland south of Hill Croft.
  • 150m of new 450mm combined sewer upsize along Stanghow Road within the vicinity of the West Furrows Farm junction.

Creating additional storage space will allow us to hold back flows of storm sewage during rainfall events this attenuation combined with the creation of additional surface water capacity will reduce the impact of rainfall on the sewer network protecting the environment through the resulting reduction in Storm Overflow operation ensuring our sewer network continues to serve the community effectively.

We anticipate that our work will take up to 9 Months with completion anticipated in June 2025 however, as with all civil engineering construction projects, unexpected delays can sometimes occur. I would like to thank you for in advance for your cooperation while we complete this essential work.
