Project updates

Update by Sarah Jayne Parvin

Good afternoon, we want to make you aware we may be working a little later than usual today.

We are pouring the first floor of the 3 settlement tanks, placing 170m3 concrete to form the base. We have another 2 of these to do over the next 6 weeks—the dates for pour 2 and 3 to be confirmed nearer the time.

We expect the shift to run into the night as the concrete needs to set to a point where it can be walked on and power floated to give a smooth finish. Some low-level lighting equipment on-site provides safe access/egress to the works area and some noise when the power float is in use throughout the shift.

If you have any questions, please comment below or use the ‘contact us’ option above to speak to one of the team.

We want to thank you for your patience during this time.

Thanks

Sarah

Good afternoon all.

A quick post to notify you that you may hear some noise coming from the site tomorrow as we get the generator tested. There will also be work carried out around the Final Settlement Tank area which will involve using the crane.

Please be assured noise will be kept to a minimum, and work will only be carried out between 7.30 am and 5 pm.

It's three months since Washington STW's last update, and despite one of the wettest January's on record, we still managed to hit the programme, shifting 24,460 tonnes of muck in the process. Working with Sheet Piling UK, we have reduced the bulk excavation depth, allowing us to utilise a cantilevered 'z' pile temporary works system. This reduction brought several benefits to the project

1) H&S - removed the need to lift and install heavy Temporary Works (TW) items in the form of frames and propping

2) Provides better access for plant

3) Reduced our programme on the TW installation/removal

4) Financial savings removing props and frames from the TW design and reducing the muck away costs

5) Reduction of our Carbon footprint – 620 wagon journeys avoided. That's 5678kg of carbon!

Looking ahead, we will be constructing three 20m diameter Final Settlement Tanks in the main excavation utilising a 135T crawler crane.

Elsewhere, the inlet works are progressing to the programme. We have lifted the new screen and compactor units into place. Over the next two months, these will be electrically connected and commissioned to receive sewerage inlet flow to the treatment works. This will significantly improve the treatment process of the sewerage.

If you have any questions or feedback, don't hesitate to get in touch using the 'contact us' tab at the top of the page or comment below, and one of the team will be in touch.

Thanks

Update by Sarah Jayne Parvin

Good afternoon all, time for an update ahead of MMBs festive shutdown.

Removal and exporting off-site of the excavated material is progress well and is currently planned for completion by the end of January. There are a couple of pictures below to show the scale of the excavations where the final settlement tanks will be constructed.

The construction of the new concrete walls for the upgrade of the inlet works is progressing as planned, with the install of the new mechanical screening equipment scheduled for the end of February.

MMBs site team will break up for Christmas on Tuesday 22nd December returning to work on Monday 04th January.

Site operatives will occasionally visit site over the Christmas break to check on essential equipment.

As this is an operational Sewerage treatment works NWG operations on site will continue as normal over Christmas.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your patience and understanding while we have been carrying out this essential work and would like to wish you a peaceful Christmas and New Year.

Thanks

Good morning

I hope you are well and managing Lockdown 2. Our work is essential so whilst the pandemic is ongoing, so are our teams onsite.

The work to construct the new tanks continue and the installation of the temporary ground support is halfway there. Once this is complete we will start excavating material which is likely to begin week commencing 16 November. This particular section of work will involve removing and exporting 11,000 square meters of material and recycling it at another location so, you will notice an increase in wagon movement over the next few months using the site entrance off Pattinson Road.

The electrical upgrade is progressing well and new control panels have started to arrive on site and at the north east end of the site work to upgrade the inlet works continues.

As the amount of work underway increased there has been a rise to the workforce and plant/equipment onsite so we thought some visuals of the progress so far would be useful.

If you have any questions or feedback, don’t hesitate to get in touch using the ‘contact us’ tab at the top of the page or comment below and one of the team will be in touch.

Thanks

Good morning all, the works to upgrade Washington Sewerage treatment works are progressing really well.

We have established our site set up for the project team which includes office units and welfare cabins whilst the works are ongoing.

Ground works to allow the replacement of the electrical system have commenced on site involving, muck shift work at the south end of the site are underway, we are currently reducing the existing ground level to create a level area to allow the construction of the 3 new Final settlement tanks.

Large Excavators and dump trucks are being used to remove the muck and this is being stored on site for re-use as a backfill material around the final settlement tanks.

Storing the material on site and re-using it is greatly reducing the number of road wagon required on and off site.

Upfront works have also commenced on the north east side of the site, to facilitate the construction of a new inlet channel which will accommodate the additional screening equipment.

If you have any questions or would like to speak to one of the project team can use the 'Contact us' button at the top of this page.

Good afternoon All, we would like to give you an update with our ongoing work at Washington STW. On Wednesday 5th August we will be starting to use a mobile concrete crusher for up to 4 days, to recycle 900 tons of concrete from our demolition work onsite. Once this material has been crushed this will be used as subbase for our foundations on various infrastructures on the project.

If we were to export this material from site it would take approximately 45 wagon journeys traveling on average of 17 miles each way, by cutting out these wagon journeys it reduces our carbon footprint by approximately 4195kg of CO2 emissions.

I have included a picture of the crusher that we will be using onsite.

Thanks

Good morning all, to date we have imported 3000T of Type1 sub-base (crushed stone) during this phase of the enabling works. The stone has been used to form a base foundation for the site compound, as well as access roads and material storage areas in preparation the main contract works.

We have included some pictures of the work below, the red sky in the morning being my favourite.

I’d would like to wish you a peaceful Christmas and New Year.

Hi Washington

Apologies for my delay in posting a huge thank you to those of you who were able to come along to our customer event at Teal Farm Pub on 27 November. The weather on that particular evening wasnt great but the number of attendees was impressive and for me it was a great opportunity to meet some of the locals and discuss this particular project.

Earlier today I attend Leat House for the weekly project team meeting with Northumbrian Water and Mott Macdonald Bentley and took the opportunity to take a quick photo!

We will be posting regular updates for you and if there is anything else you can think of please get in touch using the contact us button above,
