Project updates

Update by Gabrielle Ward

Good afternoon,

I'm pleased to be able to confirm that we've substantially completed our sewage treatment works refurbishment at Washington STW. The upgrade work included the construction of the following to improve the performance and reliability of the sewage treatment works to ensure it continues to provide the highest standards of service:

  • new inlet works including screening and flow control / recording
  • increased final settlement treatment on site by constructing three new final settlement tanks increasing the final capacity to 7 FST’s in total.
  • Full electrical upgrade including MCC panels and kiosks, and a new SCADA computer control system
  • Construction of new sludge pumping station and returns pipework
  • Construction of Northumbrian Water network services yard
  • Installation of flow control systems around site

While we have completed all construction work and commissioned the new treatment processes, there are still some minor reinstatements to be carried out.

I have included drone footage taken in July 2022 where you get a bird’s eye view of the STW now the construction work is complete.

On behalf of the Project Team, we would like to thank you for your patience throughout the duration of our work.

We would like to reassure you that we do aim to keep all disruption to an absolute minimum. If you are travelling near site, we kindly ask you to stay extra vigilant.

If you have any questions, please leave a comment below and a member of our project team will get back to you.

Good Afternoon,

It's been a while since I last shared an update with you all.

The construction of the Final Settlement Tanks (FST's) are still ongoing. The engineering of the scraper bridges has now been complete. The scraper bridge is a metal structure which sits within the FST's which rotates slowly around the tank and scrapes the settled sludge from the floor of the tank. Please see the photos I have included, this shows you what these look like.

Please leave a comment below with any questions you may have. Alternativley, if you’d prefer a telephone conversation or require any further information or advice, please get in touch with our Customer Centre on 0345 717 1100 or visit www.nwl.co.uk to request a call back from the project team.

Thank you,

Gaby

Good Afternoon,

We wanted to share the latest time lapse video showing the construction of the Final Settlement Tanks (FST). They are looking a lot different to the last video we shared back in March.

I hope you enjoy watching our progress on site.

Thanks all,

Good Afternoon,

We wanted to post a quick update and let you all know how work has progressed on site since our last update.

Construction works at Washington STW are progressing well. At the new final settlement tanks the backfill operation is  over 80% complete. The run of good weather has allowed us to utilise the as dug clay material which we excavated and stored on site back in October 2020. We have also been busy at the inlet having installed and commissioned the first of three new screen handling units. Electrical upgrade works have continued on programme and we now have 4 out of 5 new MCC’s (Motor Control Centres) installed and commissioned.

Looking ahead we will be removing the temporary works at the Final Settlement Tanks and then moving onto the next phase of works in that area which involves installation of the remaining drainage infrastructure, Manhole chambers and a new pump station. We would like to make you aware that while we carry out this stage of work, you may notice a slight increase in noise coming from the site during working hours. Concrete modifications will be completed at the inlet to accommodate screens 1 & 2. The electrical upgrade and commissioning element of the scheme will continue as programmed. The photographs highlight works at the Final Settlement Tanks and show the new screen handling unit at the inlet.

As always, we would like to thank you for your patience and cooperation during this time.

Good afternoon,

We want to let you know we have a further concrete pour to do tomorrow.

The concrete pour is for the Ballest ring, which in easy terms, is a concrete ring poured to seal the walls, to the base of the tanks. To form the ring a 165m3 of concrete needs to be poured. It is programmed to start on-site at 6 am setting up the concrete pump, and the concrete wagons will start coming into the site from 7 am. We are hoping to be finished by 4 pm. However, there is a chance this could run on a bit longer. Other than the wagons in and out of the site, we don't expect any further disruption.

Any questions, don't hesitate to comment below.

Thanks

Sarah

Good Morning, our third and final concrete pour is planned for the 27th May.

A total of 570m3 of concrete will have been poured to form the base of the three new Final Settlement Tanks.

The final pour will take place on 27th May, and as before, we expect the shift to run into the night as the concrete needs to set to a point where it can be walked on and power floated to give a smooth finish. Some low-level lighting equipment on-site provides safe access/egress to the works area and noise when the power float is used throughout the shift.

If you have any questions, please comment below.

Thank you for your patience during this time.

Good afternoon, we want to make you aware that we will be doing the second concrete pour on Thursday, 13th May.

We are pouring the second floor of the three Final Settlement Tanks, placing 170m3 concrete to form the base. We still have one more to complete and will notify you ahead of the work.

We expect the shift to run into the night as the concrete needs to set to a point where it can be walked on, and power floated to give a smooth finish. There will be some low-level lighting equipment on-site that provide safe access/egress to the works area and noise when the power float is used throughout the shift. I have included some pictures below of the last concrete pour.

You can comment below or use the ‘contact us’ option above to speak to one of the team.

Thank you for your patience during this time.
