WINEP Teesside Transfers

AS PART OF A £11 MILLION SCHEME, WE WILL BE CARRYING OUT ESSENTIAL WORK TO IMPROVE THE PERFORMANCE AND FLEXIBILITY OF OUR WASTEWATER NETWORK AND WASTEWATER TREATMENT WORKS IN THE LONG NEWTON, GOOSBECK AND MIDDLETON AREA. THE SCHEME WILL HELP TO IMPROVE THE WATER QUALITY OF THE THESE AREAS FOR THE BENEFIT OF PEOPLE, THE ENVIRONMENT AND WILDLIFE AND ENSURE THAT CRITICAL WASTEWATER ASSETS CONTINUE TO SERVE THE COMMUNITY EFFECTIVELY.

Planned Work

As part of a £11 Million scheme, we will be carrying out essential work to improve the performance and flexibility of our wastewater network and wastewater treatment works in the Long Newton, Goosebeck and Middleton area. The scheme will help to improve the water quality of these areas for the benefit of people, the environment and wildlife and ensure that critical wastewater assets continue to serve the community effectively.

The purpose of this project is to remove final effluent discharges from Long Newton and Goosebeck into their receiving watercourses, due to new Phosphorus consent standard. This essential work will improve the water quality of Cotham Beck and Goosepool Beck. It is proposed to transfer raw sewage flows to Middleton One Row Sewage Pumping Station (SPS) and onwards to Stressholme Sewage Treatment Works (STW) for further treatment where there is capacity to deal with the associated effluent quality standards.

Long Newton to Goosebeck:

Work will involve the repurposing of the existing inlet SPS and on-line storm tank at Long Newton with the replacement of larger pumps to transfer raw sewage to our Goosebeck STW via 3.8km of new rising main and gravity sewer within fields to the south of Long Newton.

Goosebeck to Middleton One Row

Work will involve the construction of a new transfer SPS at Goosebeck to transfer raw sewage from both Goosebeck and Long Newton to Middleton One Row SPS. The large SPS shaft will incorporate 300m3 of emergency storage and a new static screen for emergency overflows. In addition, we will be repurposing existing treatment assets to provide further balancing storage for Teesside Airport flows. Sewage flows will be transferred via 4.3km of new rising main include a critical trenchless crossing beneath the A67 and the Darlington to Teesside railway line along with a short section of gravity sewer leading into Middleton One Row.

At Middelton One Row SPS

Work will involve the construction of a new balancing tank within the works along with the  installation of a 3rd  pump within the existing transfer SPS  A second rising main constructed in 2010 will be re-commissioned to transfer the additional flow from Long Newton and Goosebeck into the Stressholme sewerage network and on to Stressholme STW for full treatment.
