GENERAL PROJECT

Castle Eden Dene Sewer

The project will reduce the risk of flooding and pollution in Castle Eden Dene by providing additional capacity in the sewer network in the Sunny Blunts area of Peterlee.

Planned Work

WORKING CLOSELY WITH RESIDENTS, LOCAL AUTHORITIES AND NATURAL ENGLAND, WE WILL BE CARRYING OUT WORK TO IMPROVE THE PERFORMANCE OF THE SEWER NETWORK IN SOUTH PETERLEE AND CASTLE EDEN DENE.

SUNNY BLUNTS AREA

The sewer network that serves customers in central and south Peterlee runs through the Sunny Blunts area before joining a sewer running through Castle Eden Dene. Our proposal to reduce the risk of flooding and pollution in Castle Eden Dene involves increasing the capacity of the sewer network in the Sunny Blunts area to allow flows being passed to Castle Eden Dene to be controlled during times of heavy rainfall. This will be done by constructing an underground storage tank in land between Sunny Blunts and Durham Way. We will also take the opportunity to repair an embankment that carries a sewer over the stream running through Sunny Blunts and which is in danger of collapsing. We will work with the local residents, Durham County Council, Peterlee Town Council and Natural England to minimise the impact of our work and restore the area on completion. The work will begin on site in early September 2022 and last until August 2023.

PETERLEE CRICKET CLUB/HELFORD ROAD AREA

We will be constructing a new sewer in land around the southern and eastern edges of the cricket ground. During this work, we will need to close footpaths to enable our work to be carried out safely but will have diversions in place to minimise disruption.
