Project updates

Update by Joan Tatters

Good Afternoon,

Well you will have noticed a lot of activity and movement these last few weeks. The job is about at closure and we are just in the process of demobilising, reinstating and moving materials to get things back to normal.

That said I just wanted to acknowledge to you that some of the reinstatement work south of the cricket club isn't to our standards and we are currently addressing the situation with the subcontractor. This will be resolved in due course, your feed back would be greatly appreciated.

Another one of our sites and the Nature Reserve will be taking advantage of the left over soil so we will be moving that mound in the next few days.......we are  very happy to recycle.

We will drop you a line in the next 2-3wks explaining everything and more importantly thanking you all for your support and understanding during this project.

Thank you once again..

Update by Joan Tatters

Good Afternoon,

Here is this month's update from Alex and the team:-

On the South (Tank) side of site we have excavated out for a flow control unit to be installed downstream from the storage tank. The excavation is 7m deep overall and we currently have the concrete base and the first manhole ring in place. We expect to be out of the ground with the manhole within the next 10 days. The embankment stabilisation works have now been completed and the footpath is open as usual. The repair works to the embankment has been reinstated with topsoil and seed and should hopefully see some flowers coming through in the next few weeks. The drainage and footpath has been fully reinstated with a small section of the footpath re-laid around an existing manhole cover to remove the bump in the path that was there before.

Thank you once again for your support and understanding

Good Morning

Following on from last weeks post I just thought I'd give you some good news!

Last week Sarah and I were chatting to some residents in the Dene area where it was our intention was to close the footpath. We soon realised how precious the path was to the public and how it was heavily utilised. So many lovely people took the time to talk to us, a lot were accompanied with their four legged friends which was also great to see and we thought "lets try and keep this walkway to this area of the Dene open".

After further discussions with the project team considering health and safety assessments, Alex and his team have said they will do their utmost to open up the walkway on an evening and a weekend going forward, however there will come a time the path will need to be fully closed as the work progresses but we will keep you up to speed when we intend to close the footpath entirely temporarily of course, as it goes without saying your health & safety is our priority.

So keep an eye out on the portal and I will be in touch.

Thank you again for your patience.

Update by Joan Tatters

Good Afternoon,

Just following on from Sarah's last up date I thought I'd take the opportunity to introduce myself, I am Joan Tatters. Sarah is moving onto a different project over in the Gateshead area and I am pleased to say I will be seeing this project through until it's completion. Good Luck Sarah!!!

Works have progressed well on both sides of the site. The Northern side has seen all of the embankment reinstated, ready for topsoil to be replaced and the Pavilion fencing is currently under construction with view to finish the fencing by 24th March. The footpath around the perimeter of the Pavilion field has been reinstated to it's original state, we hope to have this open for public access by 31th March.

The southern side tank install has now finished, with the final manhole to be constructed before the reinstatement works can fully commence. We expect to start reinstating this area in early May.

The embankment works within the Dene are on programme to start for 27th March, the footpath will be closed to public access for approx. 8 weeks. Both Sarah and I posted information around the site just to remind you about the closure and we took some photos to show the land slide on the embankment which I'm sure you will agree needs addressing.

Oh and this is me........haha

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contacta me, I'd be happy to help and as always thank you for your co-operation and understanding during this time.

Good Afternoon

In terms of progress, we're pleased to share that the Northern pipeline is substantially completed, and the final manholes are now tied in and connected. Reinstatement works around the cricket field have been started, although we've encountered some challenges with the sloppy, wet clay.

On a positive note, we've made great progress installing a substantial amount of the Southern tank, up to the last manifold now. We couldn’t have made this progress without excavating additional material than we originally planned, a bund of the materials was placed between the properties and excavation.

We're now looking ahead to starting work on the strengthening of the embankment at the Dene, which may require a footpath closure. However, we're exploring ways to minimise the impact on local walkers and the community, will keep you updated with more details as soon as we have them.

We appreciate your patience and support as we continue to work hard to complete this project.

Thank you for your ongoing cooperation.

Update by Sarah Jayne Parvin

Good afternoon, time for the first update of 2023!

We are making great progress despite the cold weather since my last update. The Northern section of the pipework has been installed from the Dene, around the cricket pitch and into our site compound area.

At the southern section, the tank area is ready for the storage pipes to start to be installed. This will be complete in 3 sections, and will involve excavation, prep and pour concrete base, lay pipe, and backfill. This process will happen 3 times in total. The reason this has been sequenced this way is due to being at full capacity in the spoil storage space, and we don’t want to remove spoil off site to return once complete. So rather than fully excavate within the frame, we have removed a 3rd of the spoil, and will relocate it to where the pipe has been installed as we progress.

We have included a couple of pictures below which show the work carried out this month.

If you have any questions please comment below and one of the team will be in touch.

Thanks

Good Afternoon all,

Since our last update work has progressed well despite the poor weather over the last couple of weeks. On the southern side all the pilling work is complete, and we are now in the process of excavating the spoil. In agreement with Durham County Council we have agreed to use a section of the grassed area to store excavated materials onsite. The benefit of this is less vehicle movement taking away materials to bring them back onsite at a later date. In the New Year the footprint of the spoil will increase and we are going to increase the height of the bunds to keep the amount of surface the materials will take up to a minimum.

On the Northern Section of the pipe work is progressing with 124 meters of 1.8m diameter pipes laid.

The site is getting ready for winter shut down on Wednesday 21st December and reopens in the New Year on 3rd January 2023.

When we return in the New Year we will continue on with the excavation operation on the southern section tank and the pipe laying in the Northern section around the cricket pitch.

On behalf of the Project Team, we would like to take this opportunity to wish you a very Merry Christmas, and all the best for 2023!

Thanks

Update by Sarah Jayne Parvin

Good afternoon throughout the week we have been auger boring the ground where the storage tanks are going to be, to loosen the ground in preparation for the piling works to take place.

The pilling work will commence next week for up to 3 weeks. To minimise the disruption of the work we will be using a technique which pushes the sheet piles into the ground, rather than driving them by traditional methods such as a hammer or vibration.

On the Northern side, work has been slower due to increasingly poor weather conditions, with the decision to form a haul road part way round the pipeline this week to make access easier.

We would like to thank you for your patience and understanding. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact us by commenting below or calling Northumbrian water on 0345 7171100.

Update by Sarah Jayne Parvin

Good afternoon, work has been progressing well since my latest update.

On the Northern section of the work, we have made a start on the excavation for the pipe work. The pipe we are installing is a little larger than the standard, so in order to create a safe working environment, we have had to design a special frame which has taken a little long than usual. These are due for delivery this week then we can progress with excavating the ground, fitting the frames, laying the pipe and back filling along the route, having approx. 12 meters exposed at a time.

The team have been busy on the southern section, reducing the ground level for the tank area. We are currently at about 2 meters below ground. There is another 5 meters to remove however this won’t be until after the sheet pilling has been installed. I have added a picture below showing the excavation. The stoned-up part on the middle is where the storage tank will be. WC the 14th November Auger boring is scheduled to take place, this will see drilling all the way around the edge of that stonework, this will loosen the ground ready for the sheet pilling to be pushed into the ground WC 21st November.

We would like to take the opportunity to thank you for your patience during this time, and please feel free to contact us if you have any questions or concerns.

Thanks

Update by Sarah Jayne Parvin

Good afternoon, my name is Sarah Parvin, I'm the customer Liaison officer for JN Bentley, the supply partner delivering the work on behalf of Northumbrian Water.

We have a great team working at Castle Eden Dene. There's Damien our Contract Manager, Alex the site manager, and Scott the site engineer. Collectively they have a vast amount of knowledge and experience to deliver the works. We also have a 12 month placement engineering student, Daniel. He has taken a year out of study to gain valuable experience in industry and see how his studies apply to a working situation.

Work has been progressing well since we started on site 5th September.

To date we have completed our welfare and compound area on the Northern part, including access track from the carpark area of Peterlee Cricket ground, carried out trial holes to locate existing services and removed fencing and completed excavations from around the cricket pitch where we are installing the new pipework.

On the south side of the job on Durham Way the foot path and lighting has been moved over to the right-hand side, to allow for the construction of a temporary access track to the south side satellite compound, where the underground storage tank will be located.

We have also completed all the topsoil stripping for the length of the pipe laying.

Over the coming weeks we have started pipe laying starting, further trial hole work on the southern section, topsoil stripping for the tank area and will be carrying out extensive earth works to reduce ground level in preparation for pilling works to start early November for the tank installation.

We would like to take the opportunity to thank you for your patience during this time, and please feel free to contact us if you have any questions or concerns.

Thanks

Sarah
