The construction phase of this project is now complete.

There may still be updates, so the project will remain here. We are still monitoring the project and will reply to any comments. So if you have any questions please feel free to comment or contact us here.

GENERAL PROJECT
CURRENT WEATHER
9°C

Castle Eden Dene, Peterlee

The work will necessitate the removal of trees including non-native conifers that were planted in the reserve in the 1970s. The work is planned to maximise benefits for wildlife, including songbird species such as long tailed tit and chiff chaff and invertebrates such as the rare dingy skipper by reshaping the natural environment.

Project updates

Update by Loren Jennings

Good afternoon and I hope you are all well.

As Spring is upon us, I wanted to let everyone know that we are making plans to return to the project area.  We need to undertake some weed control and other work to ensure that the wildflower meadow becomes established and has a chance to thrive.  I'll post again here when I have details of the dates this will happen.

Also, if you see anything around the site which hasn't been sitting well with you, please do let me know here and we can have a look at it.

I wanted to take this chance to wish all of you following this project a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

I will be in touch again after the New Year to let you know the progress of a few of the outstanding items out at Castle Eden Dene.  For example, we will be back in March or April to begin the process of weed control and ensuring that the limestone meadow becomes established.  We look forward to seeing this one through and having the Dene back in top top condition.

Good morning, everyone. I hope you did not suffer too badly from the winds last night due to Ophelia.

As an update to our progress, there are still some outstanding things to complete at Castle Eden before we're finished.  These include grass seeding, reinstating the curb ramp onto Durham Drive and fixing a portion of the fence along Durham Drive.  Some of these activities have slipped a bit due to commitments at other sites, but they are not forgotten.

We continue to work with Natural England, and will continue to do so, over the coming years to ensure the wildflower meadow becomes established and that invasive weeds are managed and removed.  I'm sorry that the site is a bit difficult to look at right now, but the natural regeneration will be worth it and sustainable into the future.

Good Morning

It's about time I contacted you as it's been a while now.

The reinstatement is starting to come together now, slowly but surely we will be finishing off and getting out of your hair!

There are still some areas which need to be sorted and we have been working closely with Natural England to ensure we, along with

our colleagues at NWG finish the area to the standard they require with the correct planting etc.

I will post some photos in due course so watch this space.

Don't forget to contact me if you want any questions answering.

Good Morning folks,

A quick update to let you all know that the original footpath which we have been using as an access road is now up and running and the temporary footpath is removed. We are currently retopsoiling this and the end is truly in sight! We have a couple of aesthetic things to do on site, the shafts will be covered up this week and reinstatement can begin in earnest. As ever, please don't hesitate to contact me at Colin.Butler@mm-b.co.uk if there are any questions, queries or issues.

Thanks

Colin

Good Morning,

"Where has the sunshine gone?"

Just to let you know our civil and engineering work is expected to be complete by the end of the month (I can hear the hoorays!)...........that is the good news,

the not so good news is it is likely we will still be around after June for a little longer.  We will be working alongside Natural England, planting and seeding so we can bring the Dene back to it's former glory.

Once again, thank you for your co-operation and patience during our presence but the end is really in sight.

Good Afternoon,

Just thought I'd introduce you to my new "partner in crime", Gemma James, who has just joined the Customer Service Team at MMB.

Today we came visit some residents and we would just like to thank them for their kind hospitality, the tea was most welcome after the down pour.

Gemma was really taken aback when she saw exactly what the CEden Team were doing, it was a great experience she said.

Here is a photo of her so please say hello!

Update by Colin Butler

Good Morning everyone,

Nice to see the good weather make an appearance this week and it's really made the Dene a pleasant area in which to work.

Our tunnelling works are now completed and we have a pipeline of approximately 375m running from a depth of 7m to 20m. The last 40m was carried out by hand at a depth of 20m and was quite a task to behold! (I've attached a couple of photos) The lads have done a smashing job and we're now carrying out the various tasks associated with demobilising access and equipment, aesthetics and reinstating the area to a level of which we can look back proudly on the legacy we leave behind. As ever, we're working hand in hand with Natural England on how we leave this beautiful area and hopefully, the only evidence of our being here will be four new manhole covers and flowers.

Thank you all for the continued patience you have with us and please don't hesitate to contact either myself or any other member of our team should you have any queries or feedback.

Enjoy your weekend

Colin

Update by Colin Butler

Good Morning,

From today, the footpath adjacent to bellister park that skirts the eastern perimeter of our site will have a slight diversion through our works. We have decided that it would be less interruptive to pedestrians/dog walkers as the initial plan was to close this footpath entirely. I don't think I'd fancy walking all the way up to a closed footpath and having to go back the way I came because I missed a warning sign (I'm always missing signs when walking my crazy Springer Spaniel, Alfie!) So for this reason, we've installed a temporary route.

As always, if there's any queries or questions on this I'm more than happy to have a chat. Alternatively, our customer liasion officer Joan is always on hand to help.

Have a lovely day everyone

Colin
