Springwell Enhancements Project

Northumbrian Water proposes to construct a new underground service reservoir on land it owns off Mount Lane, along with related pipe work in the local area, in a £56m project to commence Spring 2023, following preparatory work on site. The proposed project will not only make the water supply to customers in Springwell Village and the surrounding areas more secure, but will also enable us to support the wider Wearside and South Tyneside areas with a more reliable and resilient water supply for many years to come. The reservoir would strengthen and future-proof the company’s existing network in the area, providing storage for around 50,000 properties in South Tyneside. In addition the new reservoir will enable us to provide improved resilience to the water networks to the east of Springwell Village, benefiting a further 200,000 properties in South Tyneside and Wearside.

Project updates

Update by Richard Johnston

Hello Everyone,

As indicated last week we will have a temporary safe pedestrian/cyclist route constructed through the road closure for the start of the new school term tomorrow, Thursday 5th September.

Whilst our pipelaying works continue in this area the temporary footpath will be operating on a peak time basis.

The safe access route will be open and monitored by our site staff from the morning of Thursday 5th September through the weekend (where our work will continue) into the evening of Monday 9th September, taking into account some of the comments we received, the access route will be available from 07:45 - 9:15 and again in the afternoon 15:00 - 16:15. The temporary footpath will not be accessible outside of these timescales.

We will update further on site progress next Monday on arrangements for the rest of the week.

Again, Thank you for your continued patience whilst we undertake these works.

Hello Everyone,

A further update on the Peareth Hall Road closure, where preparation for the new pipes is well underway and good progress has been made.

We are aiming to have a safe temporary pedestrian/cyclist route constructed in preparation of the new school term by the end of shift next Wednesday 4th September.

Whilst our works continue in this area the temporary footpath will be operating on a peak time basis.

The safe access route will be open and monitored by our site staff from Thursday and Friday mornings 08:15 - 9:15 and again in the afternoon 15:15 - 16:15. The temporary footpath will not be accessible outside of these timescales.

As of today, we have the larger of the two pipes in position through the road. We will be working over this weekend to lay the second pipe, commence part localised duct repairs and start to partly backfill the trench. Because of the work involved, it will not be possible to open up a temporary pedestrian/cycle route at this time, mainly due to safety concerns.

Please keep an eye out for further update on this plan next week.

Thank you for your continued patience whilst we undertake these works

Regards

Richard Johnston

Hi everyone,

We are aware that some residents may have experienced an interruption to their water supply today.  Firstly, we want to reassure you that the interruption is unrelated to the ongoing project we are working on in the village and surrounding area.  We also want to share that our networks team has confirmed that supplies should now be fully restored, and that anyone experiencing low pressure should see that improve shortly as the network builds up across the rest of today.

The issue followed an electrical power cut which temporarily affected our network but has been fully resolved.  There was no impact to water quality.

Thank you for your understanding.

ROAD CLOSURE ON PEARETH HALL ROAD - UPDATE

We’d like to thank you for your ongoing patience whilst we undertake the essential preparation and pipelaying works within this road closure on Peareth Hall Road, which includes closure to footpaths.  We appreciate that this work may cause some disruption to local access and so we are working hard to complete our work both safely and in the quickest time possible.

Works have progressed well since Monday, so we will be able to safely construct and open a temporary access footpath for pedestrians and cyclists for the duration of bank holiday weekend, when our essential works will be paused.  The temporary access footpath will be open from early evening on Friday 23 August until 8am on Tuesday 27 August.

We will continue to work hard across next week to make further progress on these essential works.  Towards the end of next week we will provide further update on progress made, as well as any temporary arrangements that we can safely put in place to ease full road closure whilst our work continues.

There are diversion routes in place and these can be accessed from this page.  We have also uploaded a different view which outlines clearly the routes that can be safely used by pedestrians and cyclists whilst the road closure is in place.

Pedestrian footpath diversion plan

Traffic Management Diversion route

We have our regular scheduled drop in centre taking place tomorrow at Springwell Community Centre (Cozy Cafe) from 11:30 - 13:00 and welcome the opportunity to talk with anyone in the community about our project and its progress.

ROAD CLOSURE ON PEARETH HALL ROAD

This is a reminder that the planned road closure on Peareth Hall Road will be implemented on Monday, 19th August. The closure is between Highbury Avenue and Donvale Road Round about, there will be vehicle access to properties within this section of the closure at all times. The closure will last for up to four weeks while we carry out essential works. During this time, a diversion route will be in place to help manage traffic flow and ensure access to surrounding areas.

We understand that this may cause some inconvenience, and we appreciate your patience and cooperation as we work to complete this phase of the project as efficiently as possible.

Update by Anya Lowes

Good morning all we are here with our latest update.

Springwell road closure has been removed this morning, 2 weeks earlier than planned due to extended working.
We appreciate your patience when following our diversion routes throughout.

On our reservoir site we have a concrete pour planned next Tuesday the 6th.
This will be on our east side of the reservoir and will include power floating into the later hours of the night.
The excavation work in the northwest corner is going well we expect this to be complete within the next 2 weeks.
We mentioned in a past post about installing a fabrication tent in the site compound, this is due to arrive next week.
This is a temporary installation to enable us to carry out the pipe welding onsite.

Over at Eighton banks pipelaying is still underway with 15mtrs remaining. Once all the pipework is installed, we need to complete the necessary testing before we can carry out full reinstatement on the carriageway. This will mean there will be an open excavation between the Rear of Thomas Street and Sandy Lane, whilst we undertake these works.

We are happy to share the new school reading area is in place. Over the summer holidays we will be fitting it out and connecting the power ready for the pupils to come back in September.

We are grateful for your understanding and cooperation as we progress with these essential enhancements.
As always if you have any questions or feedback please contact us.

Afternoon everyone,

I wanted to let you know ahead of the weekend what work we have planned for next week in case that affects you directly.

The health and safety of our teams, customers and communities is our top priority and we need to close Springwell Road - affecting the section between B1288 and Mount Lane only  from Monday 22 July for up to 4 weeks. This is so we can lay the new 1000mm reservoir outlet pipe through the road.

We’ll do everything we can to get the pipelaying work done so the road can be re-opened more quickly. This includes increasing our daily working hours, working 8am to 8pm on weekdays and 8am to 5pm on a weekend. This should help speed up the work so Springwell Road can reopen as quickly as possible.

Please see our diversion plan here - Springwell Road.

At the reservoir site, we will be continuing with large excavation work around the north-west corner of the reservoir over the next four weeks. During the first three days of the road closure, we will be managing access for the excavation work to construction traffic only.

Over at Eighton banks the footpath remains closed but we are waiting for approval from Gateshead Council for it to be reopened. I hope to be able to share with you the reopening date soon as listening to the feedback we’ve received; I know that’s important to members of the community.

For the public footpaths that are open for use, I would ask that you please take extra care when walking by our working areas.

I will be in touch again when I have more information to share and, in the meantime, thank you for your continued patience and understanding as we complete these essential improvements.

Hi all, we are here with our latest update.
Over at Eighton banks, later than expected, we are now encroaching into the carriageway, our excavations are now extending into Galloping Green Road at the junction with Thomas Street. Whilst we are laying pipe in this section access via Galloping Green Road onto Thomas Street will be blocked. We expect to be past this point within the next 3 weeks. Once this closure reopens, we will then be pipelaying north towards Sandy Lane as we pass the rear of Thomas Street which will be closed, Our pipelaying will stop short at the Junction of Sandy Lane / Galloping Green Road with a planned return early 2025 to carry out the final main connection. Once we have more information on this, I will update you.
We have been working on the footpaths and are very nearly there with getting some of these reopened, which will give you access to Springwell Village via the cut through from the Engine Room. Please note, this is alongside one of our working areas and at times our construction traffic may need to be supervised through. For everyone's safety, gates have been installed and will be closed to allow the passing of our vehicles on occasions.
On our reservoir site we have been progressing very well. The next concrete pour will be this Wednesday the 10th of July which will require working later into the night to complete the power floating, With another pour following early August.
Over the next couple of weeks, we are expecting a delivery of a welding tent, this sits on single story cabins and will be located on our compound at Mount Lane closest to the road. This is a temporary installation whilst we need to weld pipes on site.
Also to note one of the cranes on site will be getting swapped out, I don’t have this date as yet but expect this will be in the next few weeks.
Over our three pipeline sections we are still progressing having laid approximately 597m of pipe in the past week taking us to around 60% of the way through with pipelaying.
Just a reminder Springwell road closure is fast approaching and will be from the 22nd of July for 4 weeks, followed by the closure at Peareth Hall Road from the 19th August.
We appreciate your understanding and cooperation as we progress with these essential enhancements.
Should you have any questions or feedback, please do not hesitate to reach out.
