Springwell Enhancements Project

Northumbrian Water proposes to construct a new underground service reservoir on land it owns off Mount Lane, along with related pipe work in the local area, in a £56m project to commence Spring 2023, following preparatory work on site. The proposed project will not only make the water supply to customers in Springwell Village and the surrounding areas more secure, but will also enable us to support the wider Wearside and South Tyneside areas with a more reliable and resilient water supply for many years to come. The reservoir would strengthen and future-proof the company’s existing network in the area, providing storage for around 50,000 properties in South Tyneside. In addition the new reservoir will enable us to provide improved resilience to the water networks to the east of Springwell Village, benefiting a further 200,000 properties in South Tyneside and Wearside.

Project updates

Update by Sarah Jayne Parvin

We’re pleased to inform you that the Peareth Hall Road and footpath closure's will be removed by the end of the school day today, Friday 13th September. Both footpaths will be available however we need to lay the final tarmac topping on each section, we will be completing this work on Saturday 14th September. One footpath will remain open while the other is worked on, then we’ll swap over.

We will need to revisit the area in Spring 2025 to carry out the permanent tarmac topping 15 metres either side of the pipe trench as required by Sunderland City Council. This will be done under temporary two-way traffic lights, the footpaths will remain open, so pedestrians won’t be affected. We will advise closer to the date when these works are to be undertaken.

Over at Eighton Banks, you may notice little activity at the moment. We are preparing to test the pipe laid between the west side of the reservoir and Galloping Green Road. Testing is scheduled for the end of next week, with reinstatement work to follow, aiming for completion in early November. The main pipe connection outside the Waggon Inn pub is planned for early 2025 and will take around 8 weeks. We recognise the work has taken longer than expected and want to give the area a break in the lead-up to Christmas.

At Mount Lane, work on the reservoir continues. The eastern compartment is nearing completion, and the western compartment is about 60% finished. Backfilling at the north of the reservoir site is underway, compacting the material may cause some localised vibration in the surrounding area.

Please also note that work will take place over the next two Saturdays, focused on steel fixing on the roof. The noise will be minimal as no heavy plant movement is required.             Additionally, our next roof concrete pours are scheduled for 16th and 23rd September these will be carried out during normal working hours.                                                                   A concrete floor pour is expected on the 25th September which will require power floating into the early hours

Thank you for your continued patience and support as we complete this work.

Thanks

Sarah

Hello Everyone,

As indicated last week we will have a temporary safe pedestrian/cyclist route constructed through the road closure for the start of the new school term tomorrow, Thursday 5th September.

Whilst our pipelaying works continue in this area the temporary footpath will be operating on a peak time basis.

The safe access route will be open and monitored by our site staff from the morning of Thursday 5th September through the weekend (where our work will continue) into the evening of Monday 9th September, taking into account some of the comments we received, the access route will be available from 07:45 - 9:15 and again in the afternoon 15:00 - 16:15. The temporary footpath will not be accessible outside of these timescales.

We will update further on site progress next Monday on arrangements for the rest of the week.

Again, Thank you for your continued patience whilst we undertake these works.

Hello Everyone,

A further update on the Peareth Hall Road closure, where preparation for the new pipes is well underway and good progress has been made.

We are aiming to have a safe temporary pedestrian/cyclist route constructed in preparation of the new school term by the end of shift next Wednesday 4th September.

Whilst our works continue in this area the temporary footpath will be operating on a peak time basis.

The safe access route will be open and monitored by our site staff from Thursday and Friday mornings 08:15 - 9:15 and again in the afternoon 15:15 - 16:15. The temporary footpath will not be accessible outside of these timescales.

As of today, we have the larger of the two pipes in position through the road. We will be working over this weekend to lay the second pipe, commence part localised duct repairs and start to partly backfill the trench. Because of the work involved, it will not be possible to open up a temporary pedestrian/cycle route at this time, mainly due to safety concerns.

Please keep an eye out for further update on this plan next week.

Thank you for your continued patience whilst we undertake these works

Regards

Richard Johnston

Hi everyone,

We are aware that some residents may have experienced an interruption to their water supply today.  Firstly, we want to reassure you that the interruption is unrelated to the ongoing project we are working on in the village and surrounding area.  We also want to share that our networks team has confirmed that supplies should now be fully restored, and that anyone experiencing low pressure should see that improve shortly as the network builds up across the rest of today.

The issue followed an electrical power cut which temporarily affected our network but has been fully resolved.  There was no impact to water quality.

Thank you for your understanding.

ROAD CLOSURE ON PEARETH HALL ROAD - UPDATE

We’d like to thank you for your ongoing patience whilst we undertake the essential preparation and pipelaying works within this road closure on Peareth Hall Road, which includes closure to footpaths.  We appreciate that this work may cause some disruption to local access and so we are working hard to complete our work both safely and in the quickest time possible.

Works have progressed well since Monday, so we will be able to safely construct and open a temporary access footpath for pedestrians and cyclists for the duration of bank holiday weekend, when our essential works will be paused.  The temporary access footpath will be open from early evening on Friday 23 August until 8am on Tuesday 27 August.

We will continue to work hard across next week to make further progress on these essential works.  Towards the end of next week we will provide further update on progress made, as well as any temporary arrangements that we can safely put in place to ease full road closure whilst our work continues.

There are diversion routes in place and these can be accessed from this page.  We have also uploaded a different view which outlines clearly the routes that can be safely used by pedestrians and cyclists whilst the road closure is in place.

We have our regular scheduled drop in centre taking place tomorrow at Springwell Community Centre (Cozy Cafe) from 11:30 - 13:00 and welcome the opportunity to talk with anyone in the community about our project and its progress.

ROAD CLOSURE ON PEARETH HALL ROAD

This is a reminder that the planned road closure on Peareth Hall Road will be implemented on Monday, 19th August. The closure is between Highbury Avenue and Donvale Road Round about, there will be vehicle access to properties within this section of the closure at all times. The closure will last for up to four weeks while we carry out essential works. During this time, a diversion route will be in place to help manage traffic flow and ensure access to surrounding areas.

We understand that this may cause some inconvenience, and we appreciate your patience and cooperation as we work to complete this phase of the project as efficiently as possible.

Good morning all we are here with our latest update.

Springwell road closure has been removed this morning, 2 weeks earlier than planned due to extended working.
We appreciate your patience when following our diversion routes throughout.

On our reservoir site we have a concrete pour planned next Tuesday the 6th.
This will be on our east side of the reservoir and will include power floating into the later hours of the night.
The excavation work in the northwest corner is going well we expect this to be complete within the next 2 weeks.
We mentioned in a past post about installing a fabrication tent in the site compound, this is due to arrive next week.
This is a temporary installation to enable us to carry out the pipe welding onsite.

Over at Eighton banks pipelaying is still underway with 15mtrs remaining. Once all the pipework is installed, we need to complete the necessary testing before we can carry out full reinstatement on the carriageway. This will mean there will be an open excavation between the Rear of Thomas Street and Sandy Lane, whilst we undertake these works.

We are happy to share the new school reading area is in place. Over the summer holidays we will be fitting it out and connecting the power ready for the pupils to come back in September.

We are grateful for your understanding and cooperation as we progress with these essential enhancements.
As always if you have any questions or feedback please contact us.
