Project updates

Update by Geoff Joyce

Hi, everyone,

please find below an udate on progress at Horsley WTW to Friday, 22 July, 2016.

Works have continued to the excavation for the Actiflo and Rapid Gravity Filters area at the north-west corner of the site. The excavated material generated is being stockpiled at the southern boundary of the site and will be maintained for use in backfilling operations later in the project. An existing mound to the east of our excavation has this week been removed to facilitate future works in this area. This was made possible by the diversion works to an existing pumped main ( which I reported on in the previous update).

Works to facilitate removal of existing overhead power lines serving the WTW continued throughout the week. Replacement underground cables have been laid along the western verge of Water Lane. These will be connected and energised by Northern Power Grid in the near future. (This work was originally planned for weekend of Saturday 23 and Sunday 24 July, but a threat of forked lightning for the area has slightly delayed operations).

Site staff are now comfortably settled in the site compound area accommodation.

I have attched some progress photos to the update.

Have a nice weekend.

Hi, everyone

We have , this week, concentrated on the excavation works for the Actiflo and Rapid Gravity Filters areas of the site (noth-west corner). Work is progressing well in line with the contract programme. Material removed from the excavation is being stockpiled at the south end of the site. Some of this will be used to backfill around underground structures upon completion.

A pressure test was carried out on the new diversion pipeline which was installed last week to the existing pumped main running across the site..

Have a nice weekend.

Hi everyone,

find below a summary of works up to Friday, 1 July, 2016:

Site offices and welfare units installation has continued throughout the week. Cabins have now had sanitary, water and electric services installed ready for occupation by the site team early next week. (Photos attached).

Bulk earthworks excavation, for the construction of new Actflo units (which will eventually provide the initial clarification of the water from Whittle Dene and the River Tyne which is extracted for the treatment process through the Horsley Water Treatment Works), continued throughout the week with a sizeable hole now apparent in the north-west corner of the site (photos attached).

To facilitate further excavation works for future construction the diversion of an existing 315mm diameter (12 inches to us oldsters) pumped main across the site commenced. Installation of the new pipe has been completed with pressure testing and connection works to follow next week.

Hope the weather fairs up soon. Have a nice weekend.

Hi everyone

Find below the summary for week ending Friday, 10 June, 2016.

Work continued to establish the site compound area for the location of the offices. Concrete foundations for the office units were completed and delivery of the units commenced on Thursday, 9 June. All office units are now installed. Next week we will bring in welfare facilities and stores for the construction staff.

Earthworks will commence on Monday, 13 June to provide an area for parking of vehicles for the construction duration. The material removed form the current sound screen will be replaced along the nortern edge of the compound area to provide additional screening for houses on the southern boundary of the village.

Enjoy the Queen's 90th birthday celebrations over the weekend.

An Ecologist has been present on site this week and has identified certain areas of long grass that will be hand searched by a specially trained Ecologist before the works commence to ensure we are not disturbing any local reptiles and once the project is complete Crofts Well field will be restored to its original condition to be passed back to the owner .'

Update by Sean Brown

Hi my name is Sean Brown and I am the Project Manager representing the Doosan Interserve Joint Venture who have been contracted to upgrade Horsley Water Treatment Works on behalf of Northumbrian Water.  I will be based on site at Horsley and look forward to meeting with you during the project. We intend to keep you updated via this portal on forthcoming project activities and also milestones. The design of the project is well underway and we are about to commence site activities.

This week we will be moving an excavator and small gang to carry out some investigation works on a pipeline within the plant which is linked to a system which we intend to reuse.

Week commencing 16/5/2016 we will be moving additional excavators, dumpers and operatives to carry out preparation works at the site compound located opposite the treatments works. The existing mounds of material will be moved and reshaped to form a screen around the perimeter of the compound area adjacent to houses. This screen should assist in the carry over of any noise resulting from the construction operations. This screening Mound will be no more than 2.40m (8 Ft) high.

Week commencing 31/5/2016 we hope to take delivery of our site offices which will be delivered to site by wagon and offloaded by a crane. As with all our deliveries we have instructed our suppliers to access the site via the A69 Eastbound and the Water Lane entrance avoiding Horsley Village. All deliveries to site will be monitored to ensure the authorised route only is used.

Bulk Earthworks operations will commence in early June 2016 and will involve the moving of large earthmoving plant. All these vehicles will be transported using the same route as above and as we will be reusing all the material on site this operation should have a low impact on traffic levels to and from site.

We will update regularly as the project progresses.

Thank You

Sean Brown

Update by Mike Foster

Hi everyone,

I'm Mike Foster, the Project Manager for the Horsley Water Treatment Works Upgrade project.

A £46M project to upgrade Horsey WTW has now reached a key milestone. We have selected our partners, a joint venture partnership with Doosan Enpure and Interserve Construction, to upgrade the treatment works.

The upgraded treatment works will increase the resilience of Horsley WTW improving the reliability of the treatment process and the ability to support our network that supplies clean, clear drinking water that tastes good to the Tyneside area.

In advance of the main project some work will be undertaken to remove trees and bushes on the construction site for the clarification and rapid gravity filters. This work will be carried out using specialist contractors. In addition to the ground clearance the overhead electricity line running parallel to Water Lane will be diverted to allow the contractors full access to the construction area.

The existing treatment works will remain fully operational while we upgrade the site and there won’t be any impact on the water service we provide to customers as a result of this work.

At the moment, we don’t have any further information to share but if you have any queries or want to make us aware of any additional assistance you require from us during this work then please use the ‘Contact us’ botton at the top of this page.

Regards,

Mike
