Killingworth & Longbenton

Together with our project partners, the Environment Agency and North Tyneside Council, we are investing over £5 million to manage surface water in the Killingworth and Longbenton areas of North Tyneside. This work will increase the capacity of the combined sewer thereby reducing the risk of flooding during heavy rainfall. The work is to be completed in 3 phases; Longbenton High School and Benton Green & Cemetery, Forest Hall & Killingworth Moor and finally Killingworth Lake. Phase 1 and 2 are now completed and the work around Killingworth Lake started in Summer 2018.

Project updates

Update by Christine Taylor

Good morning,

Isn't it great to see the sun out?

Maybe summer is finally on its way...

I thought I would take the time to point out the 'Rate this project' feature on this portal on the right hand side of the screen.

It would be great if you could take the time to let us know how we are doing?

We will update the portal with our work later this week.

Enjoy the sunshine

Christine

Update by Steve Boyd (Project Manager)

Hi all,

Following Christine's initial introductions for the scheme, Id like to introduce myself, I am Steve Boyd from ESH/MWH working in partnership with Northumbrian Water Group, I am project manager for this particular phase of the overall flooding scheme,

As Christine mentioned in her introductory blog we are going to undertake the construction of three surface water storage areas on the existing water course/letch

The last couple of weeks we have been constructing the temporary concrete apron over the existing footpath onto the grassed area running along side Forest Gate housing estate, followed by excavating and installing the temporary access track to what will be our proposed compound area for the main works.

We have also installed a temporary pipe crossing to form access into the farmers field where our temporary compound is to be located.

We apologize for any disruptions, in particular any site traffic issues and dust created from the stone whilst we have been installing the access track, we have carried out dust suppression although the stone dries out very quickly with the dry spell we are currently receiving, also an increase in wind speeds.

Tuesday next week we are going to be installing a tarmac covering over the stone access track, which should cease any further dust issues.

Going forward, I shall endeavor to keep you updated on a weekly basis.

Once again apologies for any disruption

Have a nice weekend

Steve.

Access track - Forest Gate

Hi Everyone

As you will no doubt be aware, we are working on our access track behind Forest Gate which will take us up to the location of our compound. It seems odd to complain about dry weather, but the dry and windy weather is making this work particularly dusty. We've spoken to one or two customers about this recently so I'd like to reassure residents that this is a temporary problem. We will be laying a tarmac surface on the access track next week - this should be completed by the end of the week at the latest - and this will significantly reduce the dust issue.

We apologise for any inconvenience caused and rest assued we are working as quickly as we can to get the job done

Tony

Update by Christine Taylor

Hi all

As you may be aware, Northumbrian Water along with Esh-MWH are embarking on Phase 2 of the Killingworth Project. The work will comprise of the construction of three surface water storage areas to hold back excess water from the watercourse during periods of heavy rainfall plus the installation of flow control devices to manage flows back into the watercourse. This will create the space needed downstream to enable completion of the works carried out last year (Phase 1) and allow the connection of the Longbenton Letch into the Forest Hall Letch.

Allow me to introduce the project team:

My name is Christine Taylor, the Customer Service Manager working for ESH-MWH on behalf of Northumbrian Water. I have already had the pleasure of meeting some members of the local community and over the period of the works you may see me walking around the area with the project team. Please feel free to come and introduce yourself and ask any questions you may have, alternatively you can post messages here on the portal.

Mark Nicholson, is the Contracts Manager for the scheme working for ESH/MWH on behalf of Northumbrian Water Ltd. He will oversee the progress of works on site, as we construct the three surface water areas. Mark will help to maintain high levels of safety, quality and customer engagement.

Steve Boyd is our Project Manager for the project, he will be working on site throughout the duration of the work; overseeing the daily operations of the scheme delivery.

Tony Birkett will be the appointed Community Liaison Officer. Tony will be on site regularly, providing support to the site team and the local community. He will be happy to help with any queries you may have.

If you have any queries or questions please feel free to contact one of us

Update by Lynn Preston

Hi Everyone

Today we start work on the second phase of our Killingworth & Longbenton Surface Water Management Project in the Killingworth Moor area. This is a follow on from the works we undertook in the Longbenton area last year and part of a 3-phase project to better manage surface water in the area. The project is being delivered together with our partners the Environment Agency and North Tyneside Council. The contractor you will see on site is ESH-MWH.

If you would like to know a bit more about the work, members of the project team will be at the Palmersville Pavilion meeting room, Great Lime Road, on Thursday 20th April between 2pm and 6pm to answer your questions. We will have drawings and plans available to view. Hope to see you there.

We thank you all in advance for your patience and understanding whilst we are working in the area.

Hi Everyone,

Just a quick update to let you know that we will be making a start on Phase 2 of the Killingworth project straight after Easter on 18th April.  As with Phase 1, the works will be carried out by our contractor ESH-MWH.

The works, which will take place in farmland on Killingworth Moor, will comprise the construction of three surface water storage areas to hold back excess water from the watercourse during periods of heavy rainfall plus the installation of flow control devices to manage flows back into the watercourse. This will create the space needed downstream to enable completion of the works carried out last year (Phase 1) and allow the connection of the Longbenton Letch into the Forest Hall Letch.

Keep an eye out on this site for the drawing which will show where we are working this year.

Customers living close to the works will receive an information letter during the last week of March. If you are likely to be directly affected by our work, our site team will let you know in advance of the works starting.
