Killingworth & Longbenton

Together with our project partners, the Environment Agency and North Tyneside Council, we are investing over £5 million to manage surface water in the Killingworth and Longbenton areas of North Tyneside. This work will increase the capacity of the combined sewer thereby reducing the risk of flooding during heavy rainfall. The work is to be completed in 3 phases; Longbenton High School and Benton Green & Cemetery, Forest Hall & Killingworth Moor and finally Killingworth Lake. Phase 1 and 2 are now completed and the work around Killingworth Lake started in Summer 2018.

Project updates

Update by Anthony Birkett

---One for the diaries--

Hi all

As you may know we've been consulting with the Friends of the Village Green about plans for the Village Green and how it will be left when we've finished the work. Northumbrian Water will be in a position to share the proposals next week. We have booked a room at Benton Dene Primary School at 1.30pm until 4.00pm on Thursday 22nd September to show the proposed landscaping drawings and photos. This is a great opportunity to come and share your views or provide an opinion.

I hope to see you there

Tony

Update by John Cartwright

Hi,

Just a quick up date as to how we are progressing, we have put into operation the temporary footpath to allow us to carry on with the drainage works through the footpath to the village green, we are progressing well and will have the normal footpath back in use by Wednesday next week.

Again thanks for your patience while we carry out the works.

Hi all

It's 'national stand your kids in front of a door in their school uniform week' again so it was vital that we finished the work in the car park on time. Unsurprisingly, we did it, so the school was able to start on time!

Good luck to all the children for the year ahead, particularly those staring a new school or who have important exams at the end of the year.

Update by Anthony Birkett

Hello everyone

Just a quick update on the ongoing work. We've had a pretty good run of weather lately so the team have been able to have a good run at the job in hand. It has meant a few early starts but hopefully we'll reap the rewards for this later in the project if it means we can get the work done any earlier than expected. We have however, taken on board one or two comments from residents about starting too early - we always listen to your comments.

Take Care

Tony

Update by John Cartwright

Hi,

I thought it about time I introduced myself, my name is John Cartwright & I am the Site Manager for ESH/MWH running the project. As you may be aware having passed the works at some stage the works are progressing and we have moved into the Village Green from the School Car Park. We are trying to keep the footpath open & as clean as possible, and appreciate everyone's patience while we are working in this area. We will be crossing the footpath at some point and will be putting in a temporary footpath for pedestrians & cyclists during this time.

Thanks for your time!

John.

Hello

I've attached a few 'work in progress' photos of the site. As you can see we're making progress despite coming up against the odd unexpected challenge! This is par for the course though and whilst we're coming up against the odd obstacle; we're getting over them like we usually do! We'll continue to work to our usual high standards and endeavour to cause as little disruption to the community as possible.

Have a good week

Tony

Hi Everyone

I was at the Killingworth site yesterday with the Project Team for a Progress Meeting and things seem to be moving along nicely. I won't bore you with photos of the lads working, so here's a photo I took yesterday afternoon of some ducks on site!

Have a nice day

Update by Anthony Birkett

My name is Tony Birkett; I am the Community Liaison Officer working for ESH-MWH on behalf of Northumbrian Water. Some of you may have seen me walking round the area speaking to customers about the upcoming work in your area. I will be in the area on a regular basis so if you see me please feel free to come and introduce yourself and ask any questions you may have, alternatively you can post messages here on the portal.

Our project team is a small group of professional individuals who have come together to form a dynamic team with different and complimentary responsibilities. We all share the responsibility to regularly update the portal to ensure that everyone is kept up to date with the progress of the work and any news relating to the site.

The Project Team

Mark Whaley, is the Contracts Manager for the scheme working for ESH/MWH on behalf of Northumbrian Water Ltd. He will oversee the works on site, which aims to take surface water out of the sewerage network and return it to the natural environment. This will create more space in the sewers during times of heavy rainfall which should help to reduce the risk of flooding in the future

John Cartwright is our Project Manager for the project, he will be working on site throughout the duration of the work; overseeing the daily operations of the scheme delivery.

Christine Taylor is the Customer Service Manager and will oversee the community engagement. She will ensure a high level of customer service and community engagement. Christine will be on site on a regular basis and very much welcomes any feedback in relation the ongoing work and delivery of service. If you see her out and about please feel free to stop her for a chat.

All of us, at some point, will be posting updates on the portal during the scheme. If at anytime during the working day, you want to speak to someone regarding the works, John, Christine or I can usually be found in the Site Compound; located on the Village Green in front of the Fusilier Pub; please feel free to drop by at anytime.

Regards,

Tony

Update by Lynn Preston

Hello everyone, my name is Lynn Preston and I am the Northumbrian Water Project Manager for the work we are to carry out in the Killingworth and Longbenton area.

This is a Partnership Project jointly funded by Northumbrian Water, the Environment Agency and North Tyneside Council. The objective is to take surface water out of the sewerage network and return it to the natural environment. This will create more space in the sewers during times of heavy rainfall helping to reduce the risk of flooding in the future.

This phase of the works will involve laying a new underground pipe to carry the diverted watercourse from Benton Cemetery to the rear of Longbenton Community College before it outfalls into the Forest Hall Letch. The Longbenton Community College playing field will be reprofiled to include an attenuation basin which, whilst normally dry, will be used as storage for the surface water during times of heavy rainfall before the flows can be returned to the watercourse.

We are keen to hear from you if you have any comments or queries regarding the proposed works so please leave your comments on this update, or get in touch using the ‘Contact us’ button at the top of the page.
