GENERAL PROJECT

Killingworth & Longbenton

Together with our project partners, the Environment Agency and North Tyneside Council, we are investing over £5 million to manage surface water in the Killingworth and Longbenton areas of North Tyneside. This work will increase the capacity of the combined sewer thereby reducing the risk of flooding during heavy rainfall. The work is to be completed in 3 phases; Longbenton High School and Benton Green & Cemetery, Forest Hall & Killingworth Moor and finally Killingworth Lake. Phase 1 and 2 are now completed and the work around Killingworth Lake started in Summer 2018.

Project updates

Update by Anthony Birkett

Hi Everyone

Richie has provided me with this week's progress update on our work at Killingworth. It's been another busy week on site - we've now finished the manhole in the Kier car park, so next week we will reinstate and resurface the area.

Around the corner on Southgate, I said previously that we had completed the access tract - now we have finished the manhole there too. You may have noticed that the fenced area is expanding a little, we will now start to develop the area so that we can use it as our compound. We'll be removing the topsoil and replacing it with stone temporarily so that we can begin to create the new basins.

I mentioned last week that we were expecting to divert a gas main on Station Road - This will now begin on 14 January 2019 instead of 3 Dcember 2018.

I've attched a couple of photos that Ive been sent.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

Hi Everyone

This week we have been busy working off Southgate. We've started constructing the manhole here in the grassed area here and will continue with this over the next few weeks.

We hope to be able to reinstate more of Kier's car park and hand it back to Kier.

From 3 December we will be back on Station Road to carry out a gas diversion. This will take 3 weeks and traffic management will be by signs and cones like it was last time we worked here, there will be no need for traffic lights!

Have a nice weekend!

Hi Everyone

We have had a productive week this week.

We have now resurfaced and handed back half of the car park back to Kier, who I bet were pleased about that! We're still working in the other half of the car park, but will get this done as quickly as we can!

We have also continued constructing the access track off Southgate and the good news is that we managed to get the traffic lights off earlier than expected.

Work will continue in the grassed area to the front of Ryder Court next week, when we will start constructing a manhole. Fencing will go up around our working area in due course.

We will also need to work by Station Road, so will need to use cones to narrow the carriageway slightly, although it will not be necessary to close any lanes or use traffic lights.

I've attached a couple of pictures taken on site this week

Have a nice weekend!

Hi Everyone

We have had a momentous week this week, as Richie puts it, it was Killingworth's own Channel Tunnel moment when our two tunnels met between Manhole 2 and 3! We'll now look to move on and continue with the pipe jacking to the next manhole.

We have also completed the work to tie in the culvert within Kier's car park. The resurfacing will be soon be done and a large part of the car park will be handed back to Kier - I bet they'll be pleased about that!

As we said last week, we have started work to the south of the Lake. We've started work on our temporary entrance off Southgate so should have the traffic lights off by the end of next week. As you know there will be a footpath diversion in place to the south of the Lake.

I've attached a couple of photos of our work this week.

Enjoy your weekend

Good afteroon Everyone

I've been spending a bit of time at our Killingworth site this week and had the pleasure of meeting a few residents around the Lake, trying to spread the word about the next stage of our work which starts on Monday.

Elsewhere, work on the pipe jacking is progressing well and we're making good progress. We're about halfway through the first drive. (I've attached a couple of pictures which perfectly illustrate the pipe jacking, which is basically pushing pipes underground between two excavations without the need to dig a trench.)

More good news is that we have now found the services that we were looking for on Station Road, so we will have this reinstated and clear of traffic management by the end of Friday 2 November 2018.

The manhole within the Kier depot is also nearly completed despite some difficult weather conditions.

As we've already expained, we start work beside the lake on Monday 5 November 2018. There will be two way traffic lights on Southgate for a period of 2 weeks while we set up the compound. Due to the position of the traffic lights, the bus stop will be suspended and temporarily moved further up the road towards The Leisure Centre.

The compound will be situated be on the grassed area to the south of the Lake, which means that the footpath nearest the Lake will be close to the public.

If anyone has any questions about the work, please get in touch

Hi Everyone

I've had the pleaseure of meeting some of you this week, when I've been out and about around the Lake. I've been trying to speak to everyone who overlooks the Lake to let you know how we are progressing and what will happen next. A copy of the letter we've distributed can be found here.

Its also been a busy week on site and the site team have made significant progress in the construction of the manholes we'll be using for the pipe jacking. I've attached a couple of photographs of them.

We are continuing with our trial holes on Station Road as we try to establish the location of the services in the road. We've found cable TV, phone lines, gas, electric, street lighting, but haven't yet found everything, so we will continue to work on Station Road with cones around the working area, so drive carefully!

Thanks to Richie for the update and great photographs!

Have a nice weekend

Hi Everyone

Bobby has provided me with this week's progress update at Killingworth and it seems as though things are moving along nicely.

We are continuing with our trial holes on Station Road and Harvey Combe Road to try and locate existing services in the ground ahead of the Pipe Jacking work. We are also continuing to work on the related draw pits. We hope to be able to start work on the Pipe Jacking by the middle of next week!

We also hope to be in a position where we will know when we can access the grassed area to the front of Ryder Court. An update will be provided when the plans are finalised.

While we'r working on Station Road, it will be necessary to keep the cones and signs in place.

I've attached a couple pictures provided by Bobby of work on the site this week

Take care

Hi Everyone

I've been in touch with Bobby on site who has provided a progress update for our work at Killingworth.

We have nearly finished the preparation work in our excavation at Kier's on Harvey Combe Road and hope to be in a position to be able to start driving the pipes under the road soon.

We are also progressing well in our excavation off Station Road and again hope to be able to start driving the pipes underground soon.

In our other excavation, we have been hand digging trial holes to try to locate other services in the ground to make sure there are no clashes when we start driving the pipes through the ground.

***In other news, we'd like to wish OUR CHIEF PIPE LAYER IN WAITING, Brodie Gregory a VERY HAPPY 17TH BIRTHDAY for tomorrow! I'm told he's a popular member of the team, although that may change if he doesn't get the cakes in!!***

Enjoy your weekend

Update by Lynn Preston

Hi Everyone

Just thought it was time to catch up after the summer.

As you can see from Tony's update, we are still working really hard to install the underground pipeline before we get to the works in the Lakeside Park.

We are busy finalising the details of the works in the park and I will be back in touch to let you know when we expect to start on that part of the works.

Have a great weekend.

Update by Anthony Birkett

Hi Everyone

I've had a progress update from Bobby on site.

I told you last week about the issues we were having with hard ground making it more difficult than expected to dig our manhole just off Station Road. We have now overcome these problems by using a larger hammer! Next, the joiners will come on site to start work on the Jacking Wall within the excavation.

We have also made progress on the manhole just outside the Kier Depot and have started on the piling works today for the Drive Pit there.

I've attached a few photographs of our work this week.

Regards

Tony
