The construction phase of this project is now complete.

GENERAL PROJECT
CURRENT WEATHER

Killingworth & Longbenton

Together with our project partners, the Environment Agency and North Tyneside Council, we are investing over £5 million to manage surface water in the Killingworth and Longbenton areas of North Tyneside. This work will increase the capacity of the combined sewer thereby reducing the risk of flooding during heavy rainfall. The work is to be completed in 3 phases; Longbenton High School and Benton Green & Cemetery, Forest Hall & Killingworth Moor and finally Killingworth Lake. Phase 1 and 2 are now completed and the work around Killingworth Lake started in Summer 2018.

Project updates

Update by Anthony Birkett

Hi Everyone

I've been in touch with Bobby and Richie on site and the have given me a progress update to pass on.

Work has been slower than hoped this week, but we are still making progress - although not as much as we'd like!

We have been continuing within the Kier Depot and finishing the works there. We have also been driving 7.5m piles into the ground off Station Road, but this has been proving very difficult as the ground is a lot firmer that we anticipated so we need a bigger hammer!

We hope to make more progress next week - I've attached some photos of our work this week

Hi Everyone

Bobby on site has provided me with an update on this week's progress.

Obviously, with the high winds and rain, it has been a challenging week for the lads, but we have continued to make progress laying the pipes through the Kier Depot.

Next we will start digging the excavation for the drive pit in preparation for the Pipe Jacking that we mentioned in the last update. We have also had a review of our design this week, so hope to start excavating the second drive pit off Station Road next week.

I've attached a few photos of work this week, kindly provided by Bobby

Thanks

Tony

Hi Everyone

I've received a progress update from Richard and Bobby on site and things are about to get interesting!

Over the last week or so we have been setting up our compound on the grassed area off Station Road - this has including creating an access track, temporary fencing and laying a stone base.

Next we will continue with our preparations for our pipe jacking works. Pipe Jacking is where we will drive a series of pipes through the ground from one pit to another in Harvey Combe Industrial Estate and Station Road - it basically means that we can install pipes without digging up the whole road, which can only be good!

I've attached a few picture showing what we've been up to over the last week.

Have a nice day

Tony

Hi Everyone

Richard has kindly provided a progress update on our work in Killingworth, this is as follows:

Today you will notice that Traffic Management will be installed on Station Road as we start to work towards the Lake. Originally we thought we may need to use two way traffic lights, but after consultation with the council, we have been able to avoid this and no longer need to use traffic lights. Access to West Bailey will be unaffected.

Over the next week, we will begin to install a new access track and fencing around our working area in the playing fields.

For everyone's safety, please do take care driving through the traffic management.

If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to make contact and we will be happy to help.

Regards

Tony

Good evening,

Its that time of the week where I ask our site team for an update. Richard Brown our site manager has provided the following, thank you Richard.

"With diversions complete on other utillity services, we have now started excavation of the first manhole which will ultimately connect into an existing culvert (the piped flow of water, beneath the ground) running under the East Coast Main Line.

Always a busy time at the start of a project with a lot of work going on the in the back ground to ensure future works run smoothly. So it’s been a great help having Faye Donnelly on board with us as a Summer Placement Student.

Faye (pictured with some of the team and making sure our Engineer Adam is on the ball) is a 2nd year student studying Civil Engineering at Edinburgh University. She is nearing the end of a 12 week placement with Northumbrian Water and its partners (obviously saving the best till last…!) and by all accounts has thoroughly enjoyed her time.

Faye says, ‘I’ve enjoyed gaining some insight into civil engineering and now appreciate the diversity of the industry covering the roles of Client, Designer and Contractor. I especially enjoyed dealing with the public and stakeholders with Northumbrian Water; crunching numbers for structural calculations with MMB and the site management aspect and life on site with Esh-MWH.  It’s been a great experience working with lovely people who have built my confidence and made me feel at ease.’

We would like to wish Faye all the very best in her studies and, if we’ve done our job right, her career in Civil Engineering."

One final word from our site team is to wish you all a happy Bank Holiday, as it is the last one of 2018.

Let us all hope the sun shines.

Christine

Good evening,

We thought it was time we sent a photo of our site team.  So I convinced the lovely Richard Brown, our Project Manager to take a selfie on site.  You can also see our Site Manager on the photo, our very own Bobby Smailes (3rd from right).

On another note, we havee now established on site in Kier North Tyneside Council Depot to construct the outfall pipeline. Many thanks to Kier for accommodating us in their depot, we have spent our first week ensuring everything is in place to enable our work to start.

As we progress we will be more visible as we work our way out of the Harvey Combe Industrial Estate and into the playing fields and the lake area.

Feel free to come and speak to our team if you want to ask any questions or simply want to chat about the works.  Also remember I am here on the other end of this portal if you need anything.

Have a lovely weekend

Christine

Hi Everyone

I've had the pleasure of speaking to many residents in the area recently to provide information on what we're up to; and of course we've met many of you at the customer event that Northumbrian Water held.

As you may have noticed, we've started work in the area. This week will mostly consist of setting up the site before we start digging in the industrial estate. We've set up our compound in the ground of Kier and I have attached a photo of the site compound.

We'll keep you updated on here with regular progress updates and I will be in touch as we move closer to the Lake, although it will be some time before we get there.

Speak soon

Update by Lynn Preston

Hi Everyone

Hope you have all been enjoying this lovely summer.

It has taken us a little longer than expected to get everything in place ready for the final phase of the works in Killingworth and Longbenton but we are now ready to make a start.

However, we can now confirm that work are due to start in the Kier yard on Harvey Combe on 6th August and we will gradually make our way across Station Road and into the Lakeside Park. During this time, our supply partner, Esh-MWH, will be able to keep you informed of progress and likely timescales in more detail.

Letters will be making their way to those people closest to the works at the end of this week. The letters will explain what to expect when the works start. Some residents may also recieve a call from Esh-MWH, either Tony or Christine, who will be able to discuss the works in more detail.

In the meantime feel free to get in touch via this webportal if you have any queries.  You can do this by either, commenting on this post or the 'Contact Us' button at the top of this page.

Update by Christine Taylor

Good morning everyone,

I am sitting with Lynn Preston at the moment and thought it would be a great opportunity to update our portal.

As discussed with customers at our event by the lake on the 30th May, we needed to apply for planning permission to enable the works to go ahead.

Lynn submitted for planning permission early in this year, and hopes to gain a decision next month.  Once we have this information we will update customers of our next steps.

Carry on enjoying the sunshine
