Killingworth & Longbenton

Together with our project partners, the Environment Agency and North Tyneside Council, we are investing over £5 million to manage surface water in the Killingworth and Longbenton areas of North Tyneside. This work will increase the capacity of the combined sewer thereby reducing the risk of flooding during heavy rainfall. The work is to be completed in 3 phases; Longbenton High School and Benton Green & Cemetery, Forest Hall & Killingworth Moor and finally Killingworth Lake. Phase 1 and 2 are now completed and the work around Killingworth Lake started in Summer 2018.

Project updates

Update by Anthony Birkett

Hi Everyone

My colleague Becky from the Customer Team has provided an update on a recent school visit to a local school:

Hi

A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of visiting Westmoor Primary School alongside our Added Value Coordinator Clare Davison. Whilst there we delivered a presentation in the school assembly to educate the children on the works we are carrying out in the local community near to the school and the dangers that they could face entering a building site. We also spent some time delivering STEM sessions to the Reception classes where they were involved in activities that raised awareness about the water network and what they should & shouldn’t flush down the toilet. All of the children involved were very engaged throughout the sessions and enjoyed being a part of the activities as you can see in the images attached. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those at Westmoor Primary School who welcomed us into their school during our visit.

Thanks

Becky X

Hi Everyone

Bobby has provided this week's update:

Work is progressing well on the basin excavation by the Lake. Wagon activity will continue to remove the clay from site for the next 5-6 weeks via Southgate.

The Gas Diversion on Station Road is complete but the Traffic Management will stay in place for a little while longer so we can monitor progress as we pass under the Gas Main. The Pipe Line Drillers have been on site here this week, preparing for the drilling under the gas main so they will be ready to go from Monday 4 February 2019.

We are continuing to make good progress with the pipe laying as we make our way towards the park.

Enjoy your weekend

Tony

Hi everyone

Bobby has provided me with this week’s progress update.

Despite the very cold weather, we've made decent progress. By the Lake we have started stripping the topsoil and constructing the haul road. You may have noticed the wagons bringing stone on to site. We'll soon start to take the clay off site, so the number of wagons to and from site will remain at a similar level.

On Station Road, the traffic management is still in place. The Gas Diversion that we have been working on at this location should be completed today. We then have Pipe Line Drillers due on site next week to set up ready to start work on drilling across Station Road.

By the Park, the gang has moved into the area to start work on laying the  900mm pipe between the two manholes.

And finally, by the Sig Compound, the works are complete for now until the drilling across Station Road is completed.

Have a nice weekend,

Tony

Hi everyone

Richie has kindly provided this week's progress update:

Work is progressing well in the grounds of SIG where we should finish the manhole work there by the end of today. We're also progressing well in our work around the lake - the silt fence along the lake edge is now complete in good time for the earthworks to start on Monday 21 January 2019.

Talking about the earthworks, to begin with we will create a hardstanding turning area for site traffic, then we will start to dig the new basins. For the next 8 weeks you will notice an increase in road wagons traveling to and from our site so please take care around the entrance to our site off Southgate. During this time we will have a dedicated Gateman at the entrance to our site to control construction traffic and ensure we limit our impact on the highway. We will also ensure regular a regular road sweeper is deployed to minimise the dirt on the roads.

Next week we will also start on the drainage in the playing field and heading towards the play area.

Finally, if you’ve been using Station Road on your daily commute you will have noticed us working in the carriagewa,y carryout excavation work to locate a gas main. We have no located it and Northern Gas Networks will be onsite next week to divert the gas main. The TM will continue in place for now so we can monitor the gas main whilst we install drainage across the road.

I've attached a few pictures of our work this week courtesy of Bobby.

Wrap up, its cold out there!

Hi Everyone

I hope you all had a great festive period with your family and friends!

Its a new year and we're back, refreshed and raring to go!

First of all, this week we are establishing our compound area on the grassed area between Ryder Court and the Lake.

Workwise, we've continuted working in the SIG depot and continued working in the area of the play park - you'll notice a fenced corridor here. The fencing will remove one of the access gates to the park, but the park is still open as usual. The footpaths here are also remaining open for now, but in time we will need to impose a diversion when the work gets closer to the footpath.

Next week we will start the gas main diversion on Station Road that had previously been postponed before Christmas. The work will be in the road, but we will be able to manage traffic flow with signs and cones so we don't expect delays. This will be in place for 9 weeks from Monday 14 January 2019.

The following week, we expect to start on the earthworks in the basins themselves, but I'll give more information about that next week.

I've attached a few pictures of our work this week

Hi Everyone

Thanks to Richard for this week's progress update:

By the end of today (Friday 14 December 2018) we should have completed our work within the Kier Depot and also surfaced the access road off Southgate. This access road will remain in place once work is completed to provide permanent access into the park for maintenance.

Over the next week, we will continue to erect the boundary fencing around the working area south of the Lake in preparation for the cabins arriving and work on the basins commencing in January.

We are also working on our compound area off Station Road in preparation for our drainage works in January.

Work will be winding down in the coming week, as we will be closing the site down for our two week Christmas break from Friday 21 December 2018.

Hope you have a lovely weekend, enjoy the build up to Christmas!

Hi Everyone

Thanks to Bobby for this week's progress update:

Within the Kier Depot we expect to complete the resurfacing work on Thursday next week. We will also be working in the the excavation near to Sig, where we need to increase its size to accomodate larger pipes.

Our work area off Station Road will need to be extended a little so we can return there to carry out more work on the manhole there - this will be restricted to the football field area so won't impact on traffic.

The area where the compound will be located should be finished today and the cabins will arrive in January 2019, after our Christmas break. We are close to completing the access road off Southgate and have booked our Tarmac contractors to surface this next friday. This will mean a single lane closure and two-way traffic lights on Southgate from 09:30 until 15:00 on Friday 14 December 2018.

We will also start work on fencing off an area around the Lake on Monday.

I've attached some pictures of this week's work.

Have a good weekend

Tony
