GENERAL PROJECT

Lynemouth Sewage Treatment Works Upgrade

We are investing over £3 million to improve storm and preliminary treatment at Lynemouth sewage treatment works to improve the quality of effluent discharging to Lyneburn and meet the demands of an increasing population in the wider catchment. Our sewage treatment works aid NWL in improving the quality of rivers and coastal waters for the benefit of people, the environment and wildlife.

Planned Work

PLANNED WORK

WE ARE INVESTING OVER £3 MILLION TO IMRPOVE STORM AND PRELIMINARY TREATMENT AT LYNEMOUTH SEWAGE TREATMENT WORKS TO MEET THE DEMANDS OF THE INCREASING POPULATION IN THE CATCHMENT AND MAINTAIN THE QUALITY OF LYNEBURN AND COASTAL WATERS FOR THE BENEFIT OF PEOPLE, THE ENVIRONMENT AND WILDLIFE.

As part of the upgrade, we will be refurbishing the existing inlet works including the replacement of inlet screw pumps and new screening equipment. The larger inlet screw pumps will increase the peak flow for full treatment and reduce the number of spills to existing storm tanks and subsequently, storm discharges to the receiving watercourse.

Due to the location of the inlet works close to the northern boundary of the site, we may need to extend our operational site marginally to accommodate the new plant and equipment. If required, the extension of the operational site would require planning permission following Northumberland County Council’s standard planning process.

In advance of the main construction work starting, we will be carrying out limited demolition work on the redundant administration building and removing decommissioned chemical dosing system.

Subject to project approvals, construction work is planned to start in the Spring of 2022 with an expected duration of up to 8 months.

The sewerage treatment works is located to the south of Lynemouth accessed off Albion Terrace adjacent to Lyneburn. Given the location of the existing treatment works, we don’t expect significant disruption, however, there may be a noticeable increase in construction traffic through edge of the village during the construction period.
